Girls, Are You Treated Equal?

According to director Ryan Murphy, Hollywood has not given chances to female directors. Since decades this is a big question: Does women have equal right as men?

There is a constant discussion around women empowerment. In fact, there is so much discussion around it that over the last decade we have graduated from talking about women's rights to women's empowerment. At least, on papers women are more empoered than they ever were.

However, we are still not confident if are treated equal. There is a doubt. The doubt became a surity when singer Madonna who was recently honoured with the Woman of the Year Award, in her victory speech said that she has been a victim of abuse, bullying, and sexism in her career. After being presented with the Woman of the Year award at Billboard's Women In Music 2016 Luncheon in New York, Madonna detailed the challenges she has faced.

She said: "I stand before you as a doormat. Oh, I mean, as a female entertainer. Thank you for acknowledging my ability to continue my career for 34 years in the face of blatant sexism and misogyny and constant bullying and relentless abuse.

"If you're a girl, you have to play the game. You're allowed to be pretty and cute and sexy. But don't act too smart. Don't have an opinion that's out of line with the status quo.

"Be what men want you to be, but more importantly, be what women feel comfortable with you being around other men.

"And finally, do not age. Because to age is a sin."

"But to the doubters and naysayers and everyone who gave me hell and said I could not, that I would not or I must not - your resistance made me stronger, made me push harder, made me the fighter that I am today. It made me the woman that I am today. So thank you,"
Madonna

Girls, now we would like to know. In what ways has the society failed you? What are your expectations from the society? Why should you been given the freedom to do what you want — is it not your birth right just like it is for a guy? Register to post your comments

There have been innumerable debates about gender in India over the years. Much of it includes women’s position in society, their education, health, economic position, gender equality etc. On one hand, the country has seen an increased percentage of literacy among women, and women are allowed to enter into professional fields, while on the other hand the practice of female infanticide, poor health conditions etc. still persist.

Today modern woman is so deft and self-sufficient that she can be easily called a superwoman, juggling many fronts single handedly. Women are now ambitious and are proving their metal not only on the home front, but also in their respective profession. Safety of women matters a lot whether at home, outside the home or working place. Last few crimes against women especially the harassment ones were very dreadful. Because of such crimes, women safety in India has become a doubtful topic.

All this is due to the lack of gender-friendly environment and improper functional infrastructure such as consumption of alcohol and drugs in open area, lack of adequate lighting, safe public washrooms, sidewalks, lack of effective police service, lack of properly working helpline numbers, etc. There is an urgent need to understand and solve this problem of women safety so that they can also grow equally like men in their own country.

Now the question arises why are we given opportunity. Well, today the Indian womenfolk demands an opportunity as we have stepped foot in every sphere and the Indian male-dominated society is compelled to give it to her. I believe in Girl Power and I have full faith in the Indian women who ready to display their caliber to the world.

Girls are still discriminated in many ways.In my society boys are free to move any where, any time ,but girls are not allowed to go out of homes because she is a girl, parents say that they caring her but it is also inequality. In our relative''s marriage the bridegrooms were western coat while brides wear Indian dresses just because she is a lady.

Even in this modern world, where so much is being said about women empowerment, boys ARE still considered superior by majority of people. That women do not have physical power and so cannot face the world is just nonsense. There are many things even I have experienced, small, but important. And I being a feminist, am angered. I am into martial arts, and sometimes we are asked, ''Do you want to be like a boy in martial arts or like a girl?'' Women aren''t inferior in any sphere of life.

Aishwarya Iyer Deens Academy

And that''s not it. In schools, when boys cry or get scared f small things, teachers tell them to not behave like a girl. What do you seriously mean, it isn''t like only girls cry and boys are brave. These qualities are there in both genders. We are told to behave ''feminine'' while doing anything, sitting, standing, talking and dressing. Why can''t we behave in anyway we want to? This is an age old utterly nonsensical belief and it must be thrown if India and ther countries want to progress.

Aishwarya Iyer Deens Academy

Even in simple things which are said from ages, men are given greater importance. Such as, Mankind and ''boys and girls''. Why can''t it be girls and boys? Why not she/he, why he/she? Why not something neutral instead of mankind, which gives greater importance to man than woman. I know these are very small things, going on since ages and porbably cannot be changed now,but these things DO matter.

And I salute Madonna for her speech and courage. Also, thanks for bringing up one of my most favourite topics.

there are three reasons that I would like about why we should be given these rights: 1. every human gets these right being the citizen of planet earth and being a human 2.this is not a favour but a thing that comes with automatically like nose , eyes , and this body 3.most important : this world needs us

Nishi Upadhyay BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

this is a hypocrite world who talks more and does less. I have seen people going out for rallies for women''s rights and then disrespecting women the very next day which is pathetic.

no , girls are not treated equally to boys still in India even after sixty-nine years of independence women are still treated in a very inferior way in society.but boys can go anywhere anytime freely and when girls don''t because they are not safe still ,the literacy rate of women is less than men in India and in rural areas it is in a very worse condition and still girls are not even allowed to move out from their homes and mostly even girl children are killed.

HATS OF TO MADONNA ITS A VERY VALID AND WORTHY QUESTION BY HER . IT IS A VERY IMPORTANT ONE WE SHOULD DEBATE ON.LET LIVE GIRL CHILDREN.........................!

The problems cannot be explained in this comment box. The society should cease being dogmatic. That is the major reason for inequality. As a girl, am not allowed to hangout with my friends as boys do. Am I not bold enough to face the outer world? If all girls had stayed inside their homes, would have we got Kiran Bedi, Kalpana Chawla and many more female gems in this world? They broke the ice. So, its up to us.

Harini.V Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

If you feel you are bold enough to face any kind of situations, then don''t worry about the society''s opinion. Because the society which pulls you down today, will stand up to praise you when you are successful. So, being a girl stay determined with your own ideas and acts.

Giving respect and listening when a girl is talking and valuing her words and thoughts is the first thing every man has to learn to do if we are to do anything close to women empowerment .

I''m sorry ,ofcourse nothe girls are not at all allowed to do things as they wish .why do men take all decisions? No matter if he a husband or father or brother he takes decisions.

Afsha Saiyed PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

No I don''t think that girls are treated equally even today. In so many middle-class families girls are discriminated. They are not allowed choose their favorite profession . They are allowed to go to school, colleges .Even today there are people who think girls cannot do anything, they think girls are only fit to do household works.

JIYA TOMAR B G S NATIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOL

Today everyone is talking all about women empowerment and its benefits and why it is essential for a society to develop. However is everyone , every single person on this varied land of rituals and superstitions truly inclined and determined to do so ? No, although in several areas of our nation we can see commendable changes in their lives, there isn''t a scarcity of such places where women still undergo a lot of pain and misery and we must work quite hard to counter them .

Hiya Kilam global indian internatonal school

These days, the government has launched many initiatives for woman empowerment and makes sure that each woman is treated equally. However, there are still some societies which do not accept this. According to me, women are powerful and have the power to do anything they want, which is clearly seen in the progress of women these days. I do not feel discriminated at all due to these initiatives and feel proud to be a female.

JIYA TOMAR B G S NATIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOL

Moreover, it also becomes essential that we initiate more efficient laws and rules and regulations so that women don''t have to face much pain and agony during their freedom struggle from the stressful claws of the hungry hunters of our so-called modern society. Also, if you really want to see a change in their status you need to do your part too without being compelled by someone else and rather by yourself.

SNEHA - R Kulapati munshi bhavan's vidhya mandir

Our society is still a male dominated one. Some parents still prefer to have sons. The child sex ratio of India has gone down to 914.Girls still face discrimination in various fields like sports and cinema. There are reports of various kinds of violence and harassment against women. Each and every human beings ,irrespective of gender, has the sole right to do whatever she/he wants.

Yashvee V. Gopi Birla Memorial School - Walkeshwar

Although girls are given equal opportunities, they really aren''t treated equally. For instance, even today when a boy gets an opportunity he is just congratulated but if a girl gets the same opportunity, it is considered to be a big deal. We often get to hear " a girl did this" but have we ever heard people saying "a boy did this"?
