Getting Students Names Right: Does It Matter?

It’s scientifically established that mispronouncing students names— whether accidentally or negligently— is a form of microaggression that is detrimental to their learning outcomes…

Some would say, “What’s in a name?” But, for many of us, our names holds ancestral and historical significance. There are fascinating stories behind how we got our names. They are part of us. So, mispronouncing a student's name truly negates his or her identity.

“Pronouncing students names correctly – during attendance or any other school activity– should always be the priority of teachers. Mispronouncing students name can hurt their self-esteem, dent their confidence, thereby creating a non-conducive environment for learning. It could also result in bullying,” pointed out a teacher. Another teacher said that “Our students deserve to be called by their correct names and I ask them to immediately correct me if, for some reason, I mispronounce.”

A New York based teacher, Adam Levine-Peres recently came out with a video breaking down why pronouncing students names correctly matters. Levine-Peres explains that there are three common problems that occur when a teacher consistently mispronounces a student’s name:

No Trust: Not pronouncing a name correctly creates an environment where a student don’t trust the teacher. As Levine-Peres say in the video, “Would you trust a person who can’t pronounce your name?”  Pronouncing students names correctly conveys important messages: I care about you, I accept you, and you are important to me.

No Perseverance: It’s okay to make a mistake, but it is not okay to keep repeating it. If a teacher is not being able to learn from his/her mistake then it gives an impression to pupils that you can give up and take an easy route. “If you don’t know how to say their name, ask them. Ask them, again, and ask them to say it slower. Ask them to say it in their native language and then spell it out phonetically in your attendance sheet,” says Levine-Peres in the video.

Common Courtesy: How would you react if someone mispronounces your name over and over again? Not caring to pronounce someone’s name properly shows a level of disrespect. It is common courtesy.

Certainly mispronouncing a student''s name intentionally will disturb them and hinder learning but if this is done accidentally then it till some extent should be pardoned because everyone makes mistakes and teachers aren''t computers to not make flaws and so must be helped by pardoning them.

Yes, it''s annoying for a child if somebody mispronounces his/her name. The child is bonded with his name and finds the mispronounciation of his name as his own dishonour or disregard.

Ritvik Baweja Bal Bharati Public School

Absolutely mispronouncing children names can definitely hurt their self esteem. When a wrong name is said the child feels it has done with him purposely. He feels bad and left out.

Harini MS NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

Mispronouncing names is completely a matter of perception. A student must know that even a teacher can make mistakes, and that they shouldn''t be taken that seriously.

Mispronouncing a student''s name during a class will make feel the student insulted and will affect his mind mentally. But as far as a mistake is concerned every one should get a chance to apologize for their mistakes.

Aditi Sahi D C MODEL SCH PKL-SEC-7

I can totally relate with this because my surname is Sahi which many people pronounce as shi, shahni, saini and what not.It is so frustrating.I don''t know why they can''t say it properly. Many a times it leads to confusion also because sometimes someone''s name also happen to be same as mine.If someone mispronounce my name I immediately correct them because I can''t help this,I am really sensitive about mispronunciation of names

DIWANSHI SHETIJA BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

Mispronouncing the names can somehow be upsetting.A student or a person is known by his name and if the name itself is at gun-point naturally the person will feel disappointing.

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

No, I don''t think that mispronouncing student''s name affect them. Very often, the person mispronouncing your name, apologises to you. So, there''s nothing to feel bad. Once in a competition, it was announced "Himani Dhawan - First position". My teacher then asked to pardon as it was "Himanshi". The judge also apologized. So, I didn''t feel bad.

Nishi Upadhyay BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

It is not right .

MEGHA BANSAL RAINBOW ENGLISH SCHOOL (JANAKPURI)

I am in favour of this. Mispronounced names can become huge psychological problems and even hamper student-teacher relationship drastically. usually the mispronounced names are unique ones thus creating a chance for peers to have a little fun and making the students embarrassed.

Hiya Kilam global indian internatonal school

Mispronouncing a student''s name surely affects their emotional well-being, lowers their confidence and hinders learning levels. We must be careful to never hurt someone by mispronouncing their name. Previously, teachers of my school always made a mistake in my surname. I informed those teachers immediately. Since then, they haven''t mispronounced my name. If someone mispronounces our name, we should tell that person about their mistake and correct them.

Brenda Marshal PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

Sometimes it does...

AKSHAT JAIN ADARSH PUBLIC SCH CBLK

Mispronouncing one''s name make his name a joke in his friends. It not only lower his confidence but also feel him down in his friend''s community. I feel internally aggressive when someone mispronounces my name.

Disha Ray APEEJAY SCHOOL (PITAM PURA)

Be it teachers or classmates, one needs to be sensitive towards others. Our name is our identity and we don''t want anyone to actually juggle around with it. So if we are on this side of the court, we have to insist others to pronounce our names correctly and if we stand on the other side, we need to ask people to correct us each time we falter.

Khushi Sharma BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

Well it''s essential to pronounce a child''s name properly especially in junior classes because a child may consider it as his disregard if his name is mispronounced. Though when a child grows elder he grasps the fact that it might be just a mistake.

Meghna Menon NSN Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chitlap

Mispronouncing students name repeatedly affects them psychologically. They tend to become anti-social as a fear envelopes them. Students start worrying if their identity would be lost as a whole when one pronounces their name wrong. Most importantly, repeating the name the wrong way should not be done as it demotivates a student and lowers self-esteem

I agree. Sociologists and psychologists are very vocal about making sure children don''t stand out in a bad way by having a name no one can pronounce, regardless of race or heritage. Even when staying true to a culture, it is possible to have a name that people can say easily.

Bhavana Jaison Atomic Energy Central School No 2

Mispronouncing the name repeatedly will irritate, but accidentally can be forgiven. As my parents names are very difficult to pronounce, the made it a point that my name should be easy to pronounce so accordingly they named me .

Nanthashree.S PRESIDENCY SCHOOLHMT LAYOUT

Definitely. Mispronouncing a student''s name will certainly make them feel a bit less about themselves for a name is one''s identity and when one changes that, it does affect the mind. Moreover, repentance of mispronouncing shows the teacher''s disregard for the student''s individuality.

Vandana Subash City International School Wanowrie

Yes obviously..Mispronouncing a name can hurt a student and make him/her very angry..Even my surname is always written wrong in certificates and other places as Subhash when it should be Subash..So this is the first time that I have been able to bring out my feelings about writing my surname wrong..

Matilde Ribeiro BALDWIN GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL

For me, my unusual name is a way of differentiating myself from the others. And if the teacher can''t pronounce it, it doesn''t mean that I am no longer Matilde Ribeiro, that I am Matilda Riberio or some other grotesque variation. It doesn''t affect my self esteem, because I am me, no matter what. Mispronouncing my name isn''t a sign of bias against me or my culture - it is a sign that the teacher needs to have a second look at her attendance record.

Snegha.L Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Yes its true, but some students does not take this into a serious note .but there are students who get depressed because of this act.I would suggest them to be soft in asking their names if they are not sure of the students names.

Yes. It''s because it devalues self esteem and they may even hate or feel shy to say their name in public.

Tejovardhan Mirtipati DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL-EAST(SRJ PUR)

Yes, getting students'' name right does matter. When I was small some students'' names were mispronounced, they felt bad. But later the teacher got their names correctly. But sometimes teachers continue to misspell names, this is bad. I also noticed that sometimes teachers mistake someone else''s name and the person they want to talk to. If the student /s is new to the teacher, it''s okay, but if they aren''t new, then the teacher has to stop it!

Riya Pandey Childrens academy

Teachers must try to focus on pronouncing the names of students correctly. Not because it is their duty but because of a student. It is sometimes unpleasant and demoralizing that your teacher is not calling your name properly and may poke you every time you try to concentrate on a subject.

Mansi Borade PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

I think who always says English with them this fault will not take but who concentrate on their language this think will be countinuing with them.

I agree that mispronouncing students name repeatedly affect their emotional well-being, lower their confidence and hinder learning levels. Students start to avoid the teacher who mispronounces his/her name as the classmates often tease them with that name again and again. This hinders learning and lowers confidence. I would also not like if someone mispronounces my name.

Maisha Islam SACHDEVA GLOBAL SCH SEC18, DWARKA

Our names are our identity. If a name is mispronounced, it surely affects our identity publicly. It at times hurts the mental sentiments of achild and leads to various health related issues as he gets unsure of his entity.

Shivansh Gupta Delhi public school nacharam

Pronouncing the name of the student correctly is a bit difficult as a teacher has to remember many names in the same class. But if a student''s name is mispronounced a number of times, the child loses confidence and always get disappointed and other students also make fun of it.If someone pronounces my name wrong will pardon him for the first time but if it is repeated I would feel bad that despite of knowing my name the person is mispronouncing it

Jarul Jangid ITL PUBLIC SCHOOL(DWARKA SEC_9)

Mispronouncing a student''s name sometimes become their nickname with which they are often bullied. My name is also often mispronounced by teachers and friends which makes me low (sometimes) but now I am used to it.

Sanjula Gupta BHAWAN VIDYALAYA CHD-SEC-27

Totally agreed. If the teacher knows your name, it makes you feel worthy and creates an environment of learning, a close knit class. Otherwise, it makes you feel alienated and unimportant.

Yashita Nagpal BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

Mispronouncing students name hurts students self esteem and he feels insulted .This can also be a major reason for bullying these days.
