Friendship Day Gifting Gets A Face lift

There was a time when Friendship Day meant colourful bands adorning the wrists of almost everyone, especially youngsters. Shops would be flooded with bands that came in intricate designs; some youngsters would even make these bands themselves for that special friend as a lasting symbol. “The band is passe now. Cute rings and personalised phone covers are more like it. My besties are planning to gift me a 12-page newspaper with the best memories printed on it,” Astha Narang, a class IV student from Delhi says. With friendship bands becoming a rare species, students say they prefer a bracelet instead.

So, is it RIP cutesy things? “Absolutely. We realised that giving something of utility like a phone cover or even a mug makes sense. There is no use for bands,” Jyotsana from Mumbai, says. Another big trend that is going to redefine ‘gifting’ are selfie corners in restaurants, stores, clubs and cafes. Shantanu Dasgupta, owner of a store in Delhi, says he has got advance bookings for his selfie corner. There are 50 people who have already taken appointments from our photographer to be clicked with their BFFs,” he explains.

Rip friendship bands

Long before actor Shah Rukh Khan made FD bands the ultimate way of cementing friendship, the Arabians and the Native Americans were using these bands as macrame — a type of textile-making that uses knots instead of weaving and is used to make these bracelets.

I learn quite a lot of things from my friends what I have not learnt in any of the book, epics or novel''s. My friends are like my comic books who offer me jokes that no writer in this universe can imagine, they are like my knowledge bank that no library in this world can offer. Colors may fade, the sun may not shine, the moon may not be bright, heartbeats may stop, lives may pass, let the whole world extinct, but my friendship, I will treasure till the day my heart stops. Happy friendship d
