Forgive But Don't Forget: Amish

Author Amish was at his eclectic best as he spoke on the fact that women have always enjoyed pride of place in ancient India. He also subtly reminded the audience that blasphemy as a word never really existed in the Indian culture and there is a reason for it. He spoke at length about what influences his stories in the third edition of the Times Litfest, 2017.

Did you know, that in ancient India, women (also known as rishikas) wrote some of the scriptures? asked Amish to a rapt audience. He went on to explain that rishis and the rishikas were placed in the same pedestal back then.

In the interactive session, he spoke about how most of his stories are based on a core philosophy which is non- fictional to begin with and then he proceeds to the plot.

The author, known to give a pop feel to his books, said the youth of this country are more Indian than we make them to be. He said the problem plaguing our society is that we want to force-feed our ancient culture to the millennials. "I feel our culture has the unique ability to adapt itself and retain the soul. That is not a bad thing," he said.

The other issue that Amish touched upon is the idea of patriotism. According to the author, patriotism is celebrating all the good things that the country has to offer but at the same time, one should not turn a blind eye to all that needs to be improved. The ideal state, for him, is a myth and is difficult to decipher. "Should we be exceedingly law-abiding or should we take the rebel route. Going by present day situation, I feel it is good to be slightly law fearing," he said laughingly.

Author Amish is a great writer, who has secretly inspired me to write as well. I love his books but one that is near to my heart is SITA Warrior of Mithlia how beautifully he has traced the journey of an adopted girl to becoming a Goddess. Also, the cover is just awesome. Loved it!
