Drop Your Plastic Bag Before Visiting Monuments

There will be a complete ban on use of polythene in all national monuments and tourist destinations from October 2. In an initiative to carry forward the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), the government chose the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi to impose the ban. According to tourism minister Mahesh Sharma, the trial phase of the initiative will be launched immediately and from October 2, it would be implemented in all the national monuments and tourist destinations.

Earlier, the government banned the manufacturing of plastic bags of below 50 microns as thinner bags currently pose a major threat to environment due to its non-disposability.

How the govt plans to go about it

  • The ministry would erect a board at the monuments or tourists place about this prohibition
  •  The ban would be applicable to the protected zone or 100-m radius of the monuments.

  • Plastic bottles would not be banned but tourists would be asked to place them in the recycle container at the tourists destinations.

  • Violators will not be penalised for the first two months but a decision could be taken later to introduce a fine.

    Students react

Apart from banning it from monuments, plastic bags should be banned at pilgrimage centres for pilgrims don't think twice before dumping these bags on those sites including the rivers. The government should penalise strictly people who carry plastic bags to such places.

Plastic bags should be banned completely from planet Earth and instead paper bags should be used as the former is not degradable. Besides, there should be a strict ban of these bags from all the natural sites- wildlife sanctuaries, parks or any other place where animals live. This is because it is extremely harmful for their health. Sometimes it may even have a direct impact on our health.

Shaina Nagpal, class XI, Riverside School, Ahmedabad

Plastics must be banned near lakes, public parks, market places  because they clog up water bodies and open drains. We need the ban on plastics because plastics do not disintegrate properly. Besides, they get eaten by stray dogs and cows, which harms them and also ruins the local ecosystem.

Plastic bags have a very huge ill impact on our environment. Not only on monuments or tourist places these should be banned on other public places too. They should only be used in limited quantity whenever required. As they are no-biodegradable so there are concerns regarding it''s proper disposal. Government should definitely make some provisions for the proper plastic disposal and specify the places where plastic is banned

Harini MS NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

Plastic bags must mainly be banned in zoos, biological reserves and any other place where animals are dominantly found. We have seen cases where animals were found dead with plastic in their stomachs, and this is a matter of serious concern.

Yoshita.s LAWRENCE HIGH SCHOOL

plastic bags are non- biodegradable substances.well i understand that there are some good uses of plastic too but plastic still should be used in a limit i will not say to ban plastic but i think it is better to reduce plastic.there are many people who depend on plastic so if suddenly banned it will surly effect many lives so better we reduce it first and then slowly ban it.not only talking about monuments but also about many places in India

Khushi Sharma BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

I don''t understand why people continue to use plastic items even when they are well informed about the hazards of using it. Banning plastic is secondary,I think that we all are known with the adverse consequences of using plastics so we ourself should take a step forward and willingly stop the usage of plastic.

Dev Manwani FR AGNEL MULTIPURPOSE SCHOOL-AMBERN

plastic bags should be completely banned so as to decrease the amount of pollution, large amount of pollution is because of plastic and instead of plastic bags paper bags or cloth bags are the right choice for decreasing the pollution. I am sure by using this method pollution can be decreased considerably
