Does Sharapova Deserve Wild Card Entry?

Maria Sharapova’s 15-month suspension for taking the cardiac drug meldonium ends on April 25 and the Russian will play her first match the following day. However, eyebrows have been raised on her wild card entry with many players disagreeing on why she has got a wild card entry. Do you agree?

Five-times grand slam champion Maria Sharapova will return to competitive action following a 15-month doping ban at the Stuttgart Grand Prix in April. The Florida-based Russian was originally banned for two years after testing positive for meldonium at last year's Australian Open.  The former world number one admitted she had used meldonium for years and was not aware it had been banned since the start of 2016. Her suspension was later cut to 15 months on appeal.

"I could not be happier to have my first match back on tour at one of my favourite tournaments," Sharapova, who won the indoor clay event three years running from 2012, said on the tournament website. "I can't wait? to see all my great fans and to be back doing what I love." She will return to action in time to contest the season's second grand slam at Roland Garros. The French Open begins on May 22.

What some tennis players said:

This is strange: Kerber
"This is, all over, a strange situation," Germany's Angelique Kerber said of the Stuttgart WTA tournament's decision to issue a wild card to Sharapova, who will play her first match since the 2016 Australian Open on April 26 -- just hours after her ban for using meldonium ends. "This is a German tournament," said Kerber, the reigning Stuttgart champion who indicated that there were plenty of German players who could benefit from a wild card.

I would not have given the wild card to Sharapova: Tsonga
France's world number eight Jo-Wilfried Tsonga said he didn't think five-time Grand Slam winner Sharapova should get a French Open wild card. "I would not do it," he said. "It's like if you give a sweet to a kid who did a bad thing, it's going to do it again. It sends the wrong message."

Player should work her way back: Andy Murray
Men's number one Andy Murray hit out at the wild cards already issued Sharapova, telling The Times last week that he believed a player "should have to work your way back" from a drugs ban." "There's no rule in place, so the tournaments are going to do what they think is best for their event. But should you get a wild card into every event when you come back? I'm not sure about that. That's something that maybe should be looked at," he said.

How are wildcards given?
Tournaments choose to award wildcards to players based on many factors. They often hand them to local players, promising young talents, stars whose rankings have fallen, players whose popularity transcends ranking, big names on the comeback trail or players through reciprocal deals with other tennis federations.
