Does Music Have The Power To Heal- Your Take?

According To A Study, Music Therapy Helps Reduce Depression In Youngsters With Behavioural, Emotional Issues...

"I had a major fight with my best friend one day over some petty issue. It upset me a lot. All through the school hours, I couldn't concentrate at all. When  I came home, I felt I needed a break. I plugged into my iPod and started listening to some music. Within half an hour, my mood changed. I realised may be we had over reacted over the issue. I called up my friend and we patched up. It was music that changed my mood. I totally agree, music has that power to uplift your mood," said Aditi Bhattacharya, a class IX student from Delhi.

Such is indeed the power of music. And, even researchers agree that music therapy helps "reduce depression in children and adolescents with behavioural and emotional problems." The study that involved 251 children and young people, found that youngsters aged 8-16 years, who received music therapy had significantly improved self-esteem and significantly reduced depression compared with those who received treatment without music therapy. It also found that young people aged 13 and over, who received music therapy had improved communicative and interactive skills, compared to those who received usual care options alone. Music therapy also improved social functioning over time in all age groups.

"There are different kinds of music for different people. Like the instrumental music that I have has nature sounds that helps my son in improving his sensory skills apart from uplifting his mood. I think it depends on you as to what suits your nerves. It could be the sound of nature, some instrument or even some vedic chants," says Pallavi Shankar, parent to a 6-year-old.

Our day to day life has entered such a phase wherein we cannot rule out an unhappy instance. It is easier said than done to forget everything and move on. Pakhi (name changed) suffered from insomnia for many months after she had a personal breakdown. "I would stay awake the whole night without batting an eyelid. Insomnia was getting the better of me. I knew I couldn't succumb to it so I started listening to meditation music. It calmed my nerves. The anxious me was slowly settling down and I was at peace with myself. Today, I meditate every day listening to such music," Pakhi adds.

Research says:

For hundreds of years, music has been used to treat illnesses and restore harmony between mind and body. Scientific studies have found:
1- Music’s form and structure can bring order and security to differently-abled and distressed children. It encourages coordination and communication, thereby improving quality of life.
2- Listening to music on headphones reduces stress and anxiety in hospital patients before and after surgery.
3- Music can help reduce both the sensation and distress of both chronic pain and postoperative pain.
4- Listening to music can relieve depression and increase self-esteem ratings in elderly people.
5- Making music can reduce burnout and improve mood among nursing students.
6- Music therapy significantly reduces emotional distress and boosts quality of life among adult cancer patients.

Yes. I do think music not only has the power to uplift your mood but also can make behavioural changes in a person. I like to listen to slow songs when I am sad or feel a bit down. The music and the lyrics in it make it relatable. I believe that sometimes its not the music that makes us smile. Its the memories and people that come in our mind when we listen to it.

Definitely . To me , music is just another form of meditation . It helps you to attain tranquillity and discover your inner self . Once, during my exams, I went crazy out of stress and couldn''t concentrate on studying for my next test . My grandma told me to sing a song that I had learnt and I instantly felt a surge of energy . If just listening to songs can uplift your mood , then think about what will happen if you sing from heart .
