Do You Still Like Shakespeare?

Now that you know that he didn’t exactly write all of his plays but has enjoyed solo credit for them for over 400 years.

For 400 years now William Shakespeare has been regarded as one of the most brilliant writers in the history of English Language and Literature. His plays have been adapted for the stage, in films (Romeo & Juliet, Shahid) and have inspired many a famous books like Moby-Dick by Herman Melville/Brave New World by Aldous Huxley/The Talented Mr Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. He was an original genius, praised universally by generations of readers and writers for his artful dialogues and the complex storyline of his plays.

But the Bard’s work, as it turns out, was not a solo act.
Fresh reports have revealed that Shakespeare wrote many of his plays in “collaboration” with other authors. Legendary writer Christopher Marlowe (Doctor Faustus) often considered as Shakespeare’s rival at the time, was a big contributor to many of the Bard’s plays. According to a news report, ‘The Oxford University Press’ new edition of William Shakespeare's works will credit Christopher Marlowe as co-author of the three Henry VI plays, underscoring that the playwright collaborated with others on some of his most famous works.’

Many scholars have had their suspicions for a long time: that Shakespeare’s plays included the work of others. Some other facts have also emerged from the research:

1. Using 'Big data,' research has revealed a case of mixed authorship in 17 Shakespeare plays.
2. The editors at Oxford Press concluded that 17 of 44 works associated with Shakespeare had input from others. (The scholars used computerized data sets to reveal patterns, trends and associations, analyzing not only Shakespeare's words, but also those of his contemporaries.)
3. Shakespeare's reputed rival Christopher Marlowe is credited as co-writer in the Henry VI trilogy of plays while playwright Thomas Middleton is credited as an adaptor for "All's Well That Ends Well". (afp)

That last part, does shake things up a tad bit. For starters, the findings may affect the perception of Marlowe as an author after a gap of 400 years. Another question that emerges is the idea of solo credit that the Bard has enjoyed till now. However, many have welcomed this news instead of being upset about Shakespeare’s ‘deception’ so to speak. For them, the discovery that Shakespeare and Marlowe were collaborators instead of rivals (as previously thought) is a cause for celebration.

Our youth reporters seem to agree.

Whether it is only Shakespeare or a collaboration with some authors, the kind of impact the name Shakespeare has made on the minds of readers is very difficult to overcome. He will always remain a genius from my point of view because he had talent and will be the ORIGINAL GENIUS.

He continues to be my favorite, for his valuable contributions to our literature and the immortal interest his writings generate.

No, I guess as I think Shakespeare's efforts towards creating literature could never go unnoticed even if he had coordinated with other authors. Moreover he proved that the right combination of talents can create wonders. Exhibition of multiple dimensions of a plot adds to the quality of a story likewise here multiple angles of the authors along with Shakespeare have given literature a solid visage. Astik Sarkar, class VI, Patha Bhavan, Kolkata

Yes, it will affect how I view Shakespeare's works, but not negatively. Even collaborating with other authors and producing a play that incorporates more than one writer's ideas, so effectively and so seamlessly is amazing work. Siddhi Hol, class X, GG International School, Pune

Collaboration with other authors may have taken his writing to the next level!  Aditi Ingle, class 9, Sos, nagpur

Yes it matters!

Yes, this will affect my personal perception of Shakespeare. I think it would be rather unfair if only he is given credit for what many people have done together. I strongly believe that every writer in the collaboration must be given due credit.

Harini M S, class XI, Nagarjuna Vidyaniketan, Bengaluru

William Shakespeare's works are no less than a historical monument. Collaboration with any other writer will changes how I perceive him, but in a positive manner. I would love to know whom he collaborated him.

My perception towards Shakespeare will definitely change a bit as the credit of the well planned plays should be given to all those who have contributed in writing them. But still Shakespeare was a great writer.

like reading Shakespeare books and poems.Like a good work of art, Shakespeare''s plays express aspects of life that transcend time.  Love, revenge, war, and political intrigue are just a few themes found in his work that are applicable to any age.  He continues to be read enthusiastically because those themes can still be connected to one''s own time,  from falling in love (Romeo and Juliet) to removal of a corrupt official (Julius Caesar) to domestic relations Taming of the Shrew

I think Shakespeare is one of the best English literature has had. His plays were written years back but those plays manifest such social problems which prevail even today. His plays are entertaining and are simply amazing.
