Do You Give-in To The Body-image Trends?

Five hours ago we had no idea about the #AbCrack, or for that matter that '#AbCrack is the new #ThighGap'. And as we speak, bloggers, social media enthusiasts and excessive-selfie-takers are choosing their camps. Those who support the beauty trends by posting an image of themselves with the thigh gap or the ab crack, versus those who want you to resist the temptation of following the herd (some one even created the anti-thigh gap trend as a protest)

Beauty standards for women have always been impossible to achieve. Before the thigh gap, there was the 'bikini-bridge' then came along the 'A4 waist challenge', 'the belly button challenge', 'the thigh brow' and you'd have to be living under a rock if you still don't know about the 'collarbone challenge'. Yes, each sounds so intriguing you probably have multiple windows open to look them up. More importantly, the objective of each 'challenge' is to reiterate the idea that a thin body is most beautiful.  Which doesn't say much for a progression in beauty standards now do they?

Trends that caught up, died or survived
But before we go on further, here is a quick one line definition of each of these beauty challenges, each of which have come to be associated with physical attractiveness, feminity and beauty.

  • #AbCrack: The Allure magazine defined it as 'a vertical line extending from the ribs down the torso, often seen on very thin models like Bella Hadid and Jasmine Tookes.'
  • ThighGap: Some women's thighs don't touch when they are standing with their feet together. The space between the thighs is like a diamond, as some have claimed. *I'm sure you will google all this for yourself, but I request you to sincerely ignore the story 'How To Get A Thigh Gap (with pictures)' on wikiHow.... till you've read this story till the end.
  • The collarbone challenge: Line a stack of coins on your shoulder. According to an Indiatimes report 'the logic is that the more pronounced your collarbone is, the more coins you can fit in the gap, and hence thinner and sexier you are. And if you can get the coins to stand rather than lie down, even better!' Ats ome point though people got bored with coins and tried it with eggs and even strawberries.
  • The A4 waist challenge: You hold an A4 size paper vertically to show off your skinny waist that is smaller than the width of the paper.
  • The belly button challenge: Put your arm behind your back, bring it around the other side and touch your belly button.
  • The Bikini Bridge: For those who have a concave stomach, the bikini bottom's fabric gets stretched between your hipbones. (Nope no picture needed here)

The anti-trend campaigns
Then there is also the Don’tJudgeChallenge, Kylie Jenner Challenge and to get a waist like Kim Kardashian, women spend hours ensconcsed in waist trainers (looks like a medieval torture device) to get get the perfect hourglass figure.
Ofcourse at home, we always have the ever dependable 'Moti' (in Hindi at least) .

The real question for you is whether you are guilty of furthering these trends, or whether you are under the guilt of believing that these new beauty trends are in fact the path to achieving real beauty. The ball's in your court. Register to post your comments

These trends are purely narcissistic views of people. The worst part is that this creates a pressure on those who can''t achieve these results and are hence conscious of their looks. One must understand that looks are waves while the personality is like the rain.

Looks of an individual should not be taken into consideration while deciding a person''s skills. If looks are seen while a competition then it would be a partiality to other people.

I can''t actually believe myself that I am reading about these challenges. These are just among those other ways in which this world lays down a criteria to be beautiful. It''s just and escape for the people who don''t know the meaning of inner beauty. On one side social media and mass media is trying to get women out of the shells of outer beauty, fair complexion and toned body and on the other side they are popularising these challenges.
