Do You Feel Burdened With Household Works?

A new report by The United Nations Children Fund suggests that girls spend 40% more time on household chores than boys

LONDON, Oct 7:  Girls between the ages of five and 14 are spending 40 percent more time on unpaid domestic chores than boys their age, missing out on chances to learn and enjoy their childhood, according to a report on Friday ahead of International Day of the Girl.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said girls are spending 160 million more hours a day on household work such as cooking, cleaning, looking after family members and collecting water and firewood.
Girls in South Asia, the Middle East and parts of Africa make up the bulk of the report, which also found that girls aged 10 to 14 took on the most disproportionate burden of chores in Burkina Faso, Yemen and Somalia.
"The overburden of unpaid household work begins in early childhood and intensifies as girls reach adolescence," said UNICEF's Principal Gender Advisor Anju Malhotra.
"As a result, girls sacrifice important opportunities to learn, grow, and just enjoy their childhood. This unequal distribution of labour among children also perpetuates gender stereotypes and the double-burden on women and girls across generations."
Analysts said gender inequality continued to pose a major challenge to meeting the U.N.'s new set of global goals agreed last year to end extreme poverty and address the lack of opportunities and violence against women by 2030.
International Day of the Girl, on Oct. 11, was set up by the United Nations in 2011 to recognise the rights of the 1.1 billion girls around the world and the challenges they face.
Researchers said addressing issues such as violence, child marriage, female genital mutilation and education as well as empowering girls to reach their potential was not only beneficiary for girls, but key for economic growth, peace and poverty reduction.
A report by the children's charity Plan International earlier this week warned millions of girls would remain at risk until there were better statistics and data to track issues such as sexual violence against girls and school attendance.

Are you happy to share the burden of household chores with your parents? Do you think it's okay for kids to help their parents with household work? Who helps more in the house — you or your brother?

Yeah we feel happy to share our burden of household chores with our parents as it gives our parents happiness and expresses our love towards them because they think us as their world. Well in my home I help my mother a lot than my sister.

The reason behind why do I do household chores because it makes me independent in some way and has actually no relation with my gender.

Being a boy, I agree that brothers often don''t contribute in the household work. It''s often girls who support their mother in cooking, cleaning etc. Already these children have school stress, homework and they get overburdened by these tasks too. Yes it''s ok till limited extended, if there is well balance between helping and doing your own work.

Probably girls help their parents in doing household chores. I would say its okay to help parents. Because parents are the only souls who care for the betterment of children. So,personally I feel really happy to share the burden of my parents.

There is nothing wrong in doing household chores. It is an integral part of the child''s holistic development. It inculcated the value that no work is small and feeling of respect and dignity for everybody''s work. But this should not be limited to only girls boys should also do same amount of work.

I think the best way to thank our parents is helping them in each and every way. And doing household chores is not a big deal. But if such works burden you, then its wrong. And if I talk about my family,me and my brother both equally share our work and we do all works together.

We are two sisters and we happily share household work with our parents. And, I think that every kid should contribute to household chores. Why it''s always "One-man show" where only the mother only perform household chores? So, get up from your comfy couches and beds and perform some household chores.

Truly speaking ,I do not often share the works but it is ok if someone is helping his or her parents. Even I would love to help them one way or the other but lack of time is the main quest. I don''t have a brother so it is only me who does a little.

I feel happy when I get the opportunity to help my parents in any way possible. According to me, kids should focus more on studies or their passion than household work. It may affect a child''s learning skills and mental strength in some way. It is perfectly alright when one wants to actually do it, but not when the child doesn''t wants to do it. My brother just increases the household work in the house since he is too young. I have noticed that my cousin sisters help much more in the house.
