Do Teachers Have Favourites? Your take

Some students believe that few lucky among them are accustomed to big smiles and back-patting from teachers. While others are often overlooked. But do teachers indeed have favourites? And is it bad for classroom management?

A good number of students pointed out that favouritism among teachers is an open secret and it creates friction in classroom. “Most teachers are biased towards certain students probably because of their academic brilliance or magnetic personality. But this creates a class system—where a few gets treated differently from the rest. This causes serious heartburn and friction in the classroom.  It could also possibly lead to bullying,” said a vociferous Fatema Kinkhabwala, class IX, Podar international school, Mumbai. Another student claimed that “To see certain students given extra attention can be psychologically upsetting specially for those who have a shy personality. They feel even more isolated.”

Benefits reserved for favourites: Good marks and no punishment

A study released this year by Department for Education in the UK, found that teachers allow “bias” and “personal feelings” to influence their marking. The study further said that teachers could be subconsciously biased according to factors such as a pupil’s gender, ability, social class or behaviour in lessons. A team of German researchers also found that “Teachers' pets are more likely to get higher scores.” Some students agree with these findings. “Teachers give special consideration to their favourites while marking their answer sheets,” believes Rajlakshmi R, class X, DAV Public School, Thane.

There are others who argue that this step motherly treatment also gets reflected in how students are punished and reprimanded. “While awarding punishments the blue-eyed students get away with mere warnings. But for others even a minor mistake can land them in principal's cabin. This blatant favourtism is demotivating and shatters our confidence,” lamented a student.

A section of students said that “teachers at the end of the day are humans and they will have their favourites. But what can they do is not to practice favouritism —whether implicitly or explicitly— in front of class.”

Teachers: We are impartial, but we need to be extra careful

“Teachers do their best to treat all kids fairly. With that said, we are only human and do respond differently to different children. But it doesn’t mean we are showing traits of favouritism. We try our best to be seen as impartial. But I agree that we need to be more careful while interacting with students. For example, when I pick students for various tasks and activities, I make sure that everyone gets a chance,” said a teacher.

But what about the charge that teachers show leniency in markings to their favourites. “It’s a misconception. We are mature enough to understand our duties and responsibilities. If few students have pointed out this anomaly, it could be an exception rather than the norm,” clarified Padmaja Limaye, teacher, Fr Agnel’s School, Vashi, Navi Mumbai.

It goes without saying that in order to create a conducive environment for learning, teachers must establish trust with their students. Playing favourites makes this an impossibility.

Yes they surely have and some teachers are really biased towards some particular child. But I think that this favoritism should be definitely be avoided as it can have an effect on the child''s life.

Ritvik Baweja Bal Bharati Public School

It''s wrong for a teacher to have a biased mindset towards his/her pupils as this can lead to isolation of some children and these children would feel introverted. A fair teacher who doesn''t have specific favourites and gives every individual in his/her class a chance to interact is the teacher we require and not a biased teacher.

Haya Naved FATHER AGNEL SCHOOL(GAUTAM NAGAR)

I think teachers are generally not biased as they show but yes being a human they have that thought of favouritism, and its not wrong according to me since favouritism is a human nature.

MANAS KUMAR BAL BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (PITAM PUR

Favouritism is not a bad phenomenon we all have some favorites either it is favourite star, player or author similarly teachers can also have their favourites but favoritism becomes a serious issue when it gives birth to biasedness and partiality which should not occur in class I think that teachers aren''t partial most of the times but when it comes to marks or chance they get inclined towards those charismatic good behaved students. So a major part of this depends on student''s behaviour.

MANAS KUMAR BAL BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (PITAM PUR

To win the hearts of teachers a student should behave well and have a good attitude towards studies. Even listening to teacher would do good but the teachers sometimes become partial because of the response and actions of children, obviously a disturbing or naughty children will have to end up with severe punishment in a case whereas ''favourite'' can escape with warning. Hence this favouritism is also connected to student''s attitude. However, not everyone can be a blue eyed boy.

Mansi Borade PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

YES!!!!! I have hear many times that some teachers are doing partiality between girls and boys. But in our school it is happening or it will not happen any how.Because our teachers know that it is totally wrong and government is taking strict action on them who are doing this partiality now generation is very fast.

Yes, teachers do have a favorite whether consciously or not and this could be the worst thing because our hard work goes unnoticed.

Brenda Marshal PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

All teachers do have favorites. But all don''t do partiality. Some support their favorites and some support the right one.

DIWANSHI SHETIJA BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

I don''t think so.Teachers are more attracted by students who are sincere and well-disciplined.It all depends on a child how he deal with teachers.FIRST IMPRESSION IS THE LAST IMPRESSION,and if a student can understand this saying well he will definitely not feel partial.

Bhavana Jaison Atomic Energy Central School No 2

Yes ,The favoritism started from history. Guru Dronacharya turn Ekalavya because he was biased towards Arjuna . The history is repeating, there are some Arjunas in every class who attracts the attention of the teachers with their charm or some magnetic powers. And many Dronacharya’s in our staff room that are attracted by this charm.

Onkarpreet Bhavan Vidyalaya

See. I do think that teachers can have favourites. Teachers like students who are generally responsible and can take up duties. However, all this is fine till the time there is no partiality. When partiality enters the scene, that is when problems begin.

Vihan R. Yalamanchili DDMS P.OBUL REDDY PUBLIC SCHOOL

Most teachers do show favouritism in the classroom. Favouritism can be very demotivating to many children as they might be feeling isolated as they get less opportunities than the brilliant kids and teachers'' pets. Teachers'' favourites usually get more marks and escape punishment due to partiality and bias.

Om Badiyani Sandipani

Every b9dy in the class should be treated equally.

sulaiman success the school

i think that teacher should treat students equley and be close to eyery students when i was in 8 th i never study in the class but i realise that education is more immortant from anything from 9 th class i am taking participate in class room and i inspire by my teachers

sulaiman success the school

we say teacher''s are second parent but what teacher''s are doing teacher''s are doing partiality to student if n of numbers student are not taking participate in the class room the teacher,s job is to make them learn and see every students in one manner

Vajra Yalamanchili DDMS P.OBUL REDDY PUBLIC SCHOOL

yes, teachers have favourite students depending on the marks and manner of the students.

SHUBHAM BANSAL RYAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

yes of course!!! teachers are attracted towards a particular child if the child is attentive, confident e.t.c. but this should not affect other students. everyone are equal!!!!

Sumedh Chavan ST. PATRICKS HIGH SCHOOL

From my take teachers do have favorites. Some teachers rely on particular students for help or any other things but not all teachers are the same some teachers also give others a chance too. But there are some students on whom teachers can rely confidently.

Hiya Kilam global indian internatonal school

Yes, I agree that many teachers have their favorites in a particular class. This is surely wrong. Teachers should pay equal attention to each student so that they do not feel neglected or ignored.

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

No, teachers are not bias but they favour students to some extent. They do so as they are highly impressed with obeisance, behaviour, punctuality, articulate nature etc. of students. They treat all their students equally but sometimes being a human they get a little inclined towards some of the students which makes other feel that she is favouring him/her.

kaviya.s Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Sometimes teachers are partial because they get attracted to students by their academic performance or by their discipline. Even though teachers are partial , they are kind and supportive to all the students. I like all my school teachers because they are impartial , supportive in every ways and give us many opportunities in spite of our academic progress.

Kashish Kakkar G.D. GOENAKA PASCHIM VIHAR

I think teachers actually aren''t biased but being humans just like us they have their favourites too. Its just that they give work and appreciate the ones who are quite close to them and we start assuming that they are pretty biased.Well ! There are a few who keep appreciating a particular student even if he is wrong so that shouldn''t be done cause it really hurts others! !

Jessica Kabuli CARMEL CONVENT SCH SEC 9 CHD

I concur to the fact that teacher''s have preconceived notions about students but, it''s natural in a way. Even we have a mindset of every person we meet in our minds. All those kids who are subjected to favouritism must have done something good to have such an impression on the teachers.

Vandana Subash City International School Wanowrie

Yes,a very good point raised! One of my science teachers is someone whom I love a lot and idolize..But she never supports me and has a few favourites with whom she is extra friendly..I have always felt hurt and lonely because of this..according to me,every student should be equal before a teacher''s eyes..

Rajashri Radjane Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School

Yes, all teachers have their favourites and they see partiality. This creates a war among the students and they are affected a lot at times. They will be linient to them and this spoils the concerned student as he does not fulfill his respondibility and have a casual activity. It also affects other students. So, I request teachers not to see any difference between different kinds of students

MEGHA BANSAL RAINBOW ENGLISH SCHOOL (JANAKPURI)

Favouritism is indeed present there but we not its effects. Yes, teachers do like some students but that doesn''t mean they would favour them with shower of some extra marks or leniency or extra pats. It''s all in the mind of some students. I''m sure our teachers are mature enough for that. But I also agree that this thinking has not arisen from nowhere but it definitely not includes all are respectable teachers.

MEGHA BANSAL RAINBOW ENGLISH SCHOOL (JANAKPURI)

Favouritism is something that''s going in students'' minds (practically also). But that''s not something good. Joint efforts by students and teachers an open interactions for this topic can only solve the problem.

Linet Christina Thomas Ryan International School Nallasopara

Unfair favouritism is much rarer in my experience. It happens, but most teachers I know are professional enough to try and avoid it. Saying that, teachers are human too, and they will have favourites, even if they don''t show it. Who doesn''t favour some people over others? That''s what friends are. What makes you choose one person as a friend over others? It can be any number of factors, and is usually quite complicated.

Linet Christina Thomas Ryan International School Nallasopara

I observed teachers are never biased for their students whether they are favorite or not. They want good for all. There are times even being favorite of teachers, they scolded me on my silly mistakes instead of ignoring them. They even praised every student when they did good in studies. So, we can''t say they demorale their students.

Kashish Verma Bharti Public School Swasthya Vihar

Yes all teachers have a favourite student which demotivates the other students and makes them feel bad. So teachers should definitely stop favouritism.

Kashish Verma Bharti Public School Swasthya Vihar

Yes all teachers have a favourite student which demotivates the other students and makes them feel bad. So teachers should definitely stop favouritism.

Kashish Verma Bharti Public School Swasthya Vihar

But if we look on the other side being a human teachers can also get attracted towards good deeds of a student and give him/her special attention and instead of getting demotivated, other students should take inspiration and try to be like him.

MISHI JAIN HAPPY SCHOOL(DARYAGANJ)

teacher''s are also humans, and they have rights to have their favorites.but they should treat all students equally.

Pragya RUKMINI DEVI PUB. SCHOOL(PITAMPURA)

Yes teachers do have their favorites but they are not partial. Teachers always praise the students who are sincere.

Neha Deshkar MONTFORT

Yes teachers do have their favorite student whom they always appreciate, sometimes ignore their mistakes & even sometimes increase their marks!! Some teachers also favor me a lot but I personally believe that this is wrong. Some students who are favored a lot take disadvantage of it.Just because of favourtisim a feeling jealousy, competitiveness, ignorance bloom in students heart. I think somewhere or the other we students are also responsible for such situation.

r.amritha ST.BRITTO''S ACADEMY

i think if teachers have their favourites, other students may feel isolated and the confidence will decrease.

Manmeet Kaur AUXILIUM HIGH

Teachers don''t have their favourites. They make they child perfect as they are capable of. Having the mindset of them being partial is totally wrong.

Nishi Upadhyay BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

They do have favourites but they themselves don''t know this.

Harini.V Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

It''s human nature to like and dislike a person. So there is nothing wrong if teachers have favourite students. The only thing is they must not be too partial towards them. Rule for one is rule for all policy should be followed. All students are talented equally. So, everyone must be considered the same. If not it creates inferiority complex among some students.

E. Deepak Sen Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Favouritism is a default characteristic in every teacher.Every teacher has a favourite student to whom they may show love and care. This may help a student to gain interest in that subject, and the teacher will also say additional informations to that student. But this may sometime go wrong when the teacher becomes partial. This may also affect that student''s education .

YASH JAIN BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

From my opinion some teachers are biased towards few students due to there good marks or there good performance in the class, these all things can create a type of jealouseness feeling in the other students of the same class. Moreover it leads a feeling of hatred for that students. So from my side teachers should not do these type of discrimination with other students and take them all as one.

Kashish Goel Bal Bharati Public School

Yes, I agree that teachers do have favorites because of good behavior and participation by a certain child in the class. It is wrong for the teacher to have a biased mindset as it affects the minds of other children in the class.

S.VIDHYAALAKSHMI SHREE NIKETAN MAT -

Teachers have favourites. They love children who are bold to express their views

Palaash Agarwal DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL ROHINI

Teachers highly appreciate students displaying discipline, sincerity, honesty, hard work, determination.Just like students have favorite teachers it is also the same with teachers. Teachers don''t like students, which bring good marks but have a very bad attitude. But the favoritism should be balanced because the others can feel bad about it.Teachers mainly like students who really deserve their hard work and HAVE brought a change.

B. Tulasitharini Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School - Puducherry

Surely every teacher has a pet student.Because of their intelligence brilliance etc they are liked by the teachers. The teachers are partial in some cases.

gandwaid sai sri jahnavi P OBUL REDDY PUBLIC SCHOOL

I believe that every teacher has a favorite bunch of of students in every class. The reasons they like them must be too perfect, but if they are really biased they are no longer respected. Every human may have favorites but they should not show it. instead they need to try adding others also in their favorite list.

EKNOOR BHATTI Bal Bharati Public School

yes teachers do have thier favorite child , it is somehow good and in the other way it is a favorotism

Anam Sayyed PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

Every teacher is having their favourite student in class but I don''t think that teachers can do partiality

Yashita Nagpal BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

Teachers sometimes find a particular child to be responsible and she thinks that he/she can be relied upon, so they become thier favourites and so, sometimes she overlook others over him/ her.

Sachika Lala BGS National Public School

Teachers actually have favorites in classes. No matter how much this thought is denied, this is very true. It does not go to the extent that the teachers'' pets get extra marks or something like that during exams, but they are paid more attention towards and selected for more activities. A few shy kids, who have the capability to do everything, face the most amount of difficulty in this situation. They feel bad, but they just can''t speak up .

Afsha Saiyed PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

Yes evey teacher has but I don''t think they do partiality!

R Somesh Skanda BHARTI KRISHNA VIDYA VIHAR

Most of us like favouritism if we are in that list, I`m sure it benefits us in many ways but what if we are not in that list!! so I think every student should be a teachers favorite so that all can have its benefit....

C.Elakshme devi Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School - Puducherry

Teachers should not have favourites because if they like a child another childs heart feel why our teacher is not liking me.Even then I am a well reading student I used to tell ,they are also students dont separate us ,we are uniformed. Even I am continuing my studies I am crossing 8th ,my experience is this..........

parvathy.m.nair kendriya vidyalaya ashok nagar

I do not competely agree some teachers have and some teacher do not have ..but i suggest it should be avoided because the child think the teacher prefers me so he may take advantage.and it also effect the child''s life!!!!!!!!!!
