Do Parliamentarians Deserve 100% Pay Hike?

It doesn’t come as a surprise that on the issue of pay hike, there is an unanimous agreement among our MPs...

A joint committee on salaries and allowances of Members of Parliament (MPs) under BJP MP Yogi Aditya Nath has recommended doubling of MPs salaries and perks. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) is said to have accepted the recommendations.

A hefty package
The committee has suggested that the salaries of MPs be raised from Rs. 50,000 per month to one lakh and constituency allowance be hiked from Rs. 45000 to Rs. 90000. This would swell the total compensation package of an MP from Rs. 1,40,000 to RS. 2,80,000. If this is not enough, the committee has also recommended a 75 percent rise in pensions. It also proposed an automatic pay revision mechanism for parliamentarians similar to the pay commission for government employees. Once implemented, the increase in MPs emoluments can put an additional burden of Rs 250 crore on the exchequer. It must be put on record that our MPs already enjoy a number of privileges —from subsidised food to convenient travel.

View: A decent salary would improve probity in public life
Recently, the MLAs of Delhi gave themselves a four-fold pay hike. Now, their monthly package is Rs 2.1 lakh up from Rs 88,000, the highest in the country. The argument given by the legislatures is that the current salary is not enough to meet their daily expenses. A parliamentarian said that “Hundreds of people, from my constituency visit me every day. It’s a basic courtesy to provide them with snacks and drinks. There are times when poor from our area seek help in terms of treatment and hospitalisation. All this requires money. Plus we have our own expenses. So, what is given to us is simply not suffice? There is another argument that increasing the salaries of MPs/MLAs is a good incentive to improve probity in public life. It means that with their expenses covered, legislatures won’t indulge in scams.

Counterview: Salaries should be linked to performance
Some legislatures have pointed out that even with the current hike, Indian MPs' salary would be much less that of their counterparts in the US, the UK, Canada, Singapore to name a few. Even our Prime Minister Narendra Modi is among the most modestly paid political leaders in the world. At Rs 1.6 lakh per month, Modi takes home a far smaller pay packet as compared to his political counterparts worldwide, including Obama and China's Xi Jinping. Yet, these statistics don't really justify a huge hike, as our per capita income is 10 to 20 times less than that of developed countries.

And remember we are living in a country where a person spending over Rs 32 a day in rural areas and Rs 47 in urban areas is not considered poor according to an expert panel headed by former RBI governor C Rangarajan. According to the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), the current Lok Sabha have the highest number of MPs with criminal cases against them. And as  many as 82 per cent of the new MPs have assets worth over Rs. 1 crore each, making it the richest Lok Sabha in history. In 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha, the figures were 30% and 58% respectively. Stats like these don’t justify the demands for a pay raise.

Also, our lawmakers have not place a system that tracks their own performance.  Why should Indian taxpayers bear the brunt of non-performing MPs?

Do our Parliamentarians really deserve 100% pay hike? Let’s know your views in the comments below.

Our Parliamentarians do deserve 100% pay hike but only if their performance is noticeable. Most of the Indian MPs do not have an acceptable and admirable background and as corruption is at stake, they can misuse the money and not use it for public well-being and prosperity. Therefore, they require high pay but only if they work for the people and not for their ownself.

Nishi Upadhyay BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

Funniest line in this whole article is the argument given by Delhi legislatures that their current salary is not enough to meet their daily expenses as if this is their only source of income. Everyone of us knows from which corrupt sources they earn money. And moreover the present salary is enough to live a king sized life. Don''t just look at the salary but look at the various facilities and allowances they get ,you will get the real picture.

Vishakha Bhalla BOSCO SR.SEC.SCHOOL( PASCHIM VIHAR)

Hats off to our Parliament members if they feel that their current salary along with extraordinary perks are not enough to meet their needs. People would have no objections if they work hard but this is sad that parliament members thinks whole day about their salary rise rather than thinking about our Country.

It is ridiculous that our MPs unite only for such decisions and not for the National Integrity and Interest like Cauvery issue

Why a peoples representative should be paid ? They are eligible for free quarters , free house keeping employees, free vehicle with a chauffeur, free air-rail tickets, free stay in government guest houses when visits different places, free security ..... goes on the list of free luxuries they enjoy at the expense of taxpayers. If this pay hike is for our soldiers , i will be happy to support for it .

India is a democratic country , if 100% pay hike is justifiable for Parliamentarians , then it should be implemented to all employees in the nation . Every one deserve a decent living . After serving for a term of five years Parliamentarians can enjoy a 100% pay hike then after serving a nation risking there life in the borders for 15 years , our great soldiers deserve more than 200% hike. Please India wake up and respond for such discoloration .

If Our Parliamentarians can show unity for passing such a bill , why can''t they think unitedly as one nation , one party for the development of the nation ?

It is unbelievable that our MPs think that the income they get is not enough to meet their daily expenses apart from other amenities they get for free. The income of our parliamentarians should be judged on their monthly stats of the real work they do for the people. That way they might end up doing what they should.

Parliamentarians deserve 100% pay hike and along with this I am sure that there will be a 100% hike in the salary of common man. All deserve a decent living

Not all parliamentarians but some truly deserve it.

Ritvik Baweja Bal Bharati Public School

These MP''s are not worthy enough to deserve these 100% pay hike. The respect given to them an the increase in their salary should depend upon their quality of work not on their demands. These parliamentarians shouldn''t be endeavored by such privileges as we all know they would misuse this money too for their own benefit and promote corruption. Therefore some other alternatives should be found so that MP''s fulfill the desires of citizens at low expenses .

I really do not think so and even if we rule out the argument of corruption for once, there is no reason to give 100% salary hike to parliamentarians who sleep in parliament, don''t attend sessions.Hike should be in accordance with their performance.

DIWANSHI SHETIJA BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

A big salute to all the persons demanding it.

DIWANSHI SHETIJA BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

Its a big NO,because the salary they are paid with is more than enough for their better and even best survival.

Bhavana Jaison Atomic Energy Central School No 2

People''s representatives should think about their people''s welfare first . Before making a hike in their salary they should make a hike in the salary of the people whom they represent.

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

I don''t think that they deserve 100% pay hike. Politics is not about minting money only but it is about discussions, debates and decision-making on various public issues which are hardly beneficial for the people living in the Indian democracy. Their below-par performances in the Indian democracy today stand as an obstruction in their pay-hike.

If we keep on giving to the people who earn a satisfactory salary then when will the situation of the have-nots raise. These people ask for 100% salary hike then what would you tell about kamarajar and many socialist. They only work for the country and they don''t depend on money...

It depends upon how they take

Brenda Marshal PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

Firstly they should involve uneducated people in the Parliament. Because of not getting educated they take bribe. Such people actually come to earn money and not the serve the citizens. In Indian way they think'' Sab chalta hai''. They actually make a lot of promises during elections and they again make those promises work after five years. In their way they think th

They think that promises are always meant to be broken.. This the not the right way for parliamentarians to rule the country....

Sanjula Gupta BHAWAN VIDYALAYA CHD-SEC-27

Not at all. 100â„… salary hike is too much! Expenses can be easily met with their present salary also if they don''t try to live a very lavish lifestyle. Stop exploiting public money!

Sanjana Mehta G.D. GOENAKA PASCHIM VIHAR

Most of the MP''s are corrupt and have "other sources" of income. They do not deserve this salary hike. If someone indeed does deserve a salary hike, it is our soldiers who put their lives in the line to protect us. Doubling the MP''s salaries is sheer waste of the public''s money. Instead of filling the pockets of corrupt Parliamentatians, this money can be put to better use to develop the country.

Darshil Shah ST. XAVIERS - LOYOLLA -2 LOYOLLA 2

People live peacefully even with an annual income of 50,000 but our Parliamentarians are so silly that they argue that they don''t have enough money. I am so shocked to read this article.

Onkarpreet Bhavan Vidyalaya

It is seriously beyond my understanding that why do our MPs demand more pay hikes. Why don''t they just use the prevailing facilities they get and do something good for the country?

Abhijit Das Sumermal Jain Public School

100% HIKE is really not required. Exceptional work only gets 100% hike (honestly)

Jessica Kabuli CARMEL CONVENT SCH SEC 9 CHD

Old wine in new bottles.... Demand for a pay hike and that too for a MPs!!!! No chance. They make rules for the country or plans to make money? Their existing salary plus the extra non-taxable services or sufficient enough for a decent living. They debate about OROP and end up deciding to have a 100% pay hike for themselves? Funds must be provided to the constituencies requiring development and progress and not to Parliamentarians who always have their mouths open.

SHUBHAM BANSAL RYAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

i think they should get their salaries on the basis of their work. our parents also get money with hard work. not by sitting on the seat. we also do hard work to get good marks.
