Debate: Which Is Better? Book Or Films

Despite the hundred million ways you can choose to use your leisure time aka social media, video games, they are no match for the classics: reading a book or watching a movie. Both fuel our imagination in very different ways; both have existed for eras together, come in different genres and count as an expression of humanity.

If a picture speaks a thousand words then a book is like a window to another dimension. Can one of them really be superior to the other?

The ones who swear by BOOKS and only books will say yes! They may even be such purists that they would refrain from watching a movie based on their favorite book. Not really since they've spent too many hours imagining it in their head. (And let's face it, imagination is best up there). It is no wonder why film based on books seem tend to disappoint.

But then again, how many of us read the entire Harry Potter series and then watched the film series because Daniel Radcliffe was so cute! It is impossible to discount films and call them inferiors because the visual medium is powerful, evocative and imaginative. A book called ‘Avatar’ or ‘Intersteller’ or ‘Minions’ wouldn’t have had the same satisfaction as seeing a yellow minion roar in laughter. Some film aficionados may go as far as saying they’d watch a film on any given day instead of reading, an act which is strenuous and requires patient.

So we asked our youth reporters to solve this philosophical question. You should weigh in on the debate in the comment section as well.

Tell us what's better? Books Or Films?

Books Books Books!

There has been a tug of war between the Book and Movie camps as long as both have existed. However, I feel books are always the better bet for a lot of reasons. Firstly, with a book there is an attention to detail, all of which cannot always be depicted on screen. Secondly, reading helps you improve your vocabulary and for aspiring writers, it gives you an idea about plot lines and styles of writing. Finally, while reading a book your imagination is put to work and comes alive with picturisation that a movie may not do justice to.

-- Sadhvi Dash, class X, Silver Oaks International School, Hyderabad

I would choose to read books, because books portray various incidents and characters in depth, which movies fail to attain. Books stimulate your imagination.   In movies you are not given the space to put your imagination to work.   I would rather snuggle into my blanket this winter with a bucket of popcorn and a good book than watch a thousand movies. The true experience of reading a book is indescribable.

Rajathariga S P, class XI, AECS Magnolia Maaruti Public School, Bengaluru
It completely depends on what you like. But when it comes to me, I would rather prefer reading a book than watching a movie. Reading books not only helps in improving the vocabulary but also increases our imagination. The words written in books make me visualise what all is happening in front of me. Reading a book is definitely the right pick at least for me.

Ayantika Dutta, class IX, Jewish Girls' School, Kolkata

Can't Choose

Watching movies kills our imagination. When we read we visualise what we read, however when we watch a movie, the directors and producers do all the imagining for us. I think both movies and books have their own place. I personally love both of them equally and picking one is really difficult. I make sure to always watch the movie after reading the book. Asavari Singh, class IX, Wisdom World, Pune

How can I choose between books and movies. I loved the Harry Potter books as much as the films version of the series! Disha Jawa, Class X, Venkateshwara Global School

Films are better!

My answer would be very obvious, watching a film. This also states that I love visually created concepts of books. The warmth of books never succeeded to attract me. I would often search for videos for my school chapter content. This concept is then permanently fixed into my mind without any intervention. This also creates a deep impact on the left brain where Visuals find their place. So my vote goes to watching a film.

Books are always on top of my preference charts. You get to imagine your characters and build up ideas about what the situation is like. However, if you watch a film, it isn''t the same. You just visualize whatever is presented to you. Edward Cullen from Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer was completely opposite from what I had imagined him to be in the movie. That''s the irony! You try on your own to imagine the writer''s mind!

Kashish Goel Bal Bharati Public School

I would choose books. Books improve our reading and grammatical skills. They also bring our imagination life which is killed in today''s young minds due to televisions and films. Both have their own important role. But still reading books in excess has no disadvantage but watching films in excess has. Thus, I support books.

It totally depends on one''s way of imagination and understanding and how he/she thinks of story line whether the person is enjoying in books and thus in his/her self created fantasy world or is lured by movie visuals which helps in understanding scenarios and also gives the instant feeling of thrill and suspense. By the way my preference goes to books because they have been a constant source of entertainment for generations and will continue to be despite being in a virtual world.

MANAS KUMAR BAL BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (PITAM PUR

Reading books not only helps in improvisation of our vocabulary along with language skills but it also frames fantasizing and imaginative power to understand and to draw inferences ultimately improving and upgrading our thinking and knowledge.

Harini MS NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

Books are much better in my opinion, because they let you imagine stuff and don''t restrict your imagination to something that''s being portrayed.

Ishika Jain BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

Definitely books are much better as it helps the person to transform itself into the character. It not only teaches us life values but also increases our knowledge. It helps children in improving their vocabulary. It opens up young minds at large. In books, sometimes text is so beautifully written that you can almost imagine it happening in front of your eyes.

Aditi Sahi D C MODEL SCH PKL-SEC-7

Books, though this is a hard choice for me but still reading the original is in some way better than seeing movie with the summary of novel as content.

saishalini Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

I feel books are more enthusiastic and real than films because they create a good impact on us and we can feel the true essence of the story line. Films are the one which includes many creative and innovations to attract people.

Kashish Verma Bharti Public School Swasthya Vihar

We all have heard a common saying" Books are a person''s best friend". So, books are definitely better than films because books enhance our creativity, writing and reading skills. They also helps to build our vocabulary.

Bhavana Jaison Atomic Energy Central School No 2

I prefer books . When reading a book , characters are created in your mind and you feel like you are moving with the characters in the book . They seems to be real and living with you .

Vishakha Bhalla BOSCO SR.SEC.SCHOOL( PASCHIM VIHAR)

It depends on one whether he/she likes entertainment shows our the person is confined to a desolate world with lots of books as their companions. According to me Films are more better as they are a treet for music lovers, fashion lovers, explorers etc. They make us understand better with real emotions that we cannot experience with books

S.VIDHYAALAKSHMI SHREE NIKETAN MAT -

Films are at the top. Because they show the reality of this world in a practical way. Books also play a major part.

APARNA.V Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School - Puducherry

I think books are so better.Because they refresh our mind

JIYA TOMAR B G S NATIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOL

This would certainly put me into a dilemma because each of them has their own advantages and disadvantages. Where we see that books take us into yet an imaginary world where we experience what is going on in the story, there we also have movies that visually describe the event of the story giving us a better idea of the scenes. Thus, we must co-hear and indulge in both of take and take good advantage of both their benefits.

DIWANSHI SHETIJA BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

Definitely I would like to choose books.Films provide us temporary happiness and emotions are engrossed for a limited time period. But books are with us 24/7.Books are considered as best friends. Moreover we can say that friends in need are the friends indeed, and so goes with the books.

Aishwarya Iyer Deens Academy

Books, anyday. Books let me imagine how things and characters are, however, in films, because there is visual representation, one does not get to imagine the way he/she wants too. It doesn''t let you think for yourself like books do. I love books.

RISHABH RAJ K.V No.1,AFS TAMBARAM, CHENNAI

Fillms are way good then books we can understand the whole story in just 3 hours while books take 2 to 3 days to complete. for example you ncan watch "Da Vinci Code" in 3 hours and if you read the book it''ll take you 2 days even though the subject is all the same. Another big example are the "Harry Potter" saga in movies it takes 12 hours and book might take months

soundarya s Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

In my view I''d say that films are better than books because it saves busy people''s time and also unveils the plot in a short duration of 2 to 3 hours. It also gives a clear picture of its views without making us interpret something of our own choice.Films are a way of expressing one''s clear picture to others whereas books gives us our own choice of views.

Kyathi DDMS P.OBUL REDDY PUBLIC SCHOOL

In my view I think books are better than movies. When you read a book you can picture in your mind what you''re reading. You can imagine how the characters look like. The novel or book you are reading would have more depth and have many plots which are more fleshed out when compared to the movie. Books don’t need batteries or a power source to run. You can take books anywhere. Movies are portable with smartphones, etc., but then you have to worry about storage, data or WiFi and battery.

Snegha.L Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

I would prefer movies because when something is read it will be really tough to understand.but when you watch movies our imaginations go beyond yonder.Books are written by great men in their own style of expressing their views.so some may like and some may dislike.it depends upon the readers choice. On the other side movies extend our thoughts beyond what we imagine.

Sharmeen Khan PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

I would choose books as my ultimate favourite. While reading books your imagination is at best and your vocabulary improving. Books make you a part of their story, as if you are a silent spectator of the whole book.

ADEEN ASHFAQUE WAGLE MARY IMMACULATE GIRLS SCH-S CRUZ(E)

books will always be at the top of my list of favourite items. but these days even films are quite influential as they have a strong message. But i would choose books before films.

preethi.k Maharishi Vidya Mandir

i think books are better, they improve our imaginative skill and reading skill.when we improve our imaginative and reading skill , then we also improve our creativity skill. on the whole books are the best for everyone

Nishi Upadhyay BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

I love to watch. Seeing is the best of learning. I would always choose films over books because they are more interesting and effective.

Haya Naved FATHER AGNEL SCHOOL(GAUTAM NAGAR)

I find both equally amazing. Books are a great time pass and I get to know a lot from books. They help in enhancing my vocabulary, and on the other hand films give me good messages. I learn a lot from movies too. They teach me about different human behaviours and many other things.

Vajra Yalamanchili DDMS P.OBUL REDDY PUBLIC SCHOOL

books are better than movies as you develop good thoughts and reading skills. people learn new words by reading books. our imagination develops more.

T.BLESSIYA BEAUTY Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School - Puducherry

I think that books are better than films. Eventhough films help us to understand visually, our reading skills & vocabulary are improved only through books. Only books are our real companions.

siddharth ranjit bhavans vidya mandhir

books are mind blowing indeed . if we read a book we will never forget it . compared to films books are fantastic like if we have seen a movie last week and if we saw a movie today we will certainly forget the old one. but IF A BOOK WRITTEN BY ANY AUTHOR IF WE HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO CONVEY WHAT THE AUTHOR SAYS TO US WE WILL NEVER FORGET IT IT WILL BE STORED IN OUR MIND.''IMAGINE IMAGINE IMAGINE!my dear book lovers!!

Pragyamita Basu B.D.M. International

Although books increases our vocabulary but people who lacks in it and has improper accent must prefer films for learning proper pronunciation along with some new vocabularies.

Ankit Jha D.A.V. SCHOOL JANAKPURI

Since there discovery books has helped human civilization to head towards development as none other discovery did!

Yashita Nagpal BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

I will always prefer books over films because when we read something with full concentration, we get to know about the deep mean which the writter wants us to understand. We get to understand each and every aspect of the write -up and it overcome the films which move so fast that we do not realise the hidden logic or aspect behind it.

Mansi Borade PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

We believe that a reader has to learn only as much technology as it''s needed to fully enjoy the magic of reading.Reading in times of digital content is changing, but it doesn''t mean that it gives less pleasure.Just the opposite. There is no difference in between a high quality paper or e-ink screen or a high resolution Retina display. The biggest pleasure comes from what we read, not from on what we read.

Ambuja Rani Ryan International School

I WOULD SURELY CHOOSE BOOKS. WATCHING FILMS ARE NOT AS GOOD AS BOOKS. BOOKS HELP IN MANY WAYS. YOU GET TO LEARN MUCH MORE THAN YOU WISH. So I definitely go for books. PS - whenever I pick a book I can''t stop reading. I am called a bookworm for the reason :D

Darshil Shah ST. XAVIERS - LOYOLLA -2 LOYOLLA 2

I think we can''t compare them as both of them teach us certain important values which we all need to inculcate in our lives. Books being a better medium of learning is my first preference.

Abhay Singh K.V I.I.P

books are really good and contain detailed information ... but i would rise my hand in the favour of movies
