Debate: Do Books Break Stereotypes?

Debate: How do books break stereotypes? (Or how did a book help you unlearn a stereotype.)

Can they really help one think differently? Even the most liberal of us carry a few preconceived notions about each other. Which is how we end up with stereotypes about caste, class, rich, poor, achievers, men, women and each other. If you’re answer is yes, tell us how. And if your answer is no… tell us why. Our youth reporters gave us a few reasons to start off.

Have your say in the comments section. We’ll pick the best responses from there. Don’t forget to leave your details there.

Books introduce children to cultural norms of the society and the world. Gender is one of them. If we take the example of the book Ballerino Nate, in it, after attending a student ballet performance, Nate decides he wants to become a ballet dancer, but is discouraged by his brother, who reminds Nate that his dream is for girls' and will require him to wear pink shoes and a dress. Despite his parents’ reassurance, Nate is still apprehensive when he begins a ballet class and learns that he is the only boy enrolled. Nate's mother takes him to a real ballet performance, where he sees that half the dancers are men. Nate gets to meet one of the dancers.  This story show that no work is unisexual, everyone can do any work.

Books really matter in changing a personal view point on a traditional fact. Books inspired people to be someone they wish to be, but criticized the society. For example, the hunger games trilogy defined a bold avatar of a girl who take up masculine activities to support her family. No doubt, the books that have defied social and gender stereotypes have been largely international bestsellers.

It's true that books can help break stereotypes. For example, books like the Hunger Games, Divergent and Magnus Chase portray strong women characters and shows that the 'weaker sex' can be quite strong. Similarly, in almost all the Percy Jackson and Dan Brown series, seemingly small objects are endowed with great significance. It makes one realise the value of things and the error of taking anything for granted.  Sivani Y, class IX, DPS-Nacharam, Hyderabad

In 'To Kill a Mockingbird', talks about racial discrimination, which remains an issue today. A lot of people today still believe 'coloured' people are below us, or they're less. But the book speaks about how they're not what they look like, because they're humble and generous and their colour doesn't matter one bit.

Tanvi Kulkarni, class X, Bal Shikshan Mandir, Pune

They do. In fact, the best books are the ones which present people from a different perspective, than what they are perceived normally. Stereotyped heroes are perfect. But Sherlock Holmes is not exemplary. He is addicted to cocaine. As he himself said, 'Heroes don't exist. And if they did, I wouldn't be one of them'. There are many books that breaks stereotypes. A few are:- "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett; Alex Haley's Roots, racial discrimination; Florentyna in Prodigal Daughter, Jeffrey Archer; Enid Blyton's Fatty. In Enid Blyton's Famous Five series, the character of George, actually Georgina. The lovable Miss Marple of Agatha Christie, though her physical appearance is of a typical elderly lady, she is a top notch slueth. Stereotypes based on professions, Dr Stapleton in the Robin Cook books is a medical professional.
Sumita Ghose, Teacher, Pawar Public school, Pune

It indeed does. Books transport us into a world where there are no restrictions. Where there is no cap on imagination. Even non fiction - Not many may have read the Forty Rules Of Love. It's about the friendship of Rumi and Shams of Tabrez. It gives you a look into the world of two great men of their times.  And the culture and rituals which were very open and welcoming than now.  The way it describes relationships between people is completely mind blowing. Hardy boys gave us a whole new look to adventure...and how age is no matter when the truth is your go.
Eleven Minutes by Paulo Coelho is a subtle example of how beautiful life could turn out, eventually. A prostitute named Maria who had always hoped to live a fairy tail goes along the line reflecting how selfless she is while at the same time continuing to express a strong streak, of ambition that makes her soul sparkle. Prostitution is almost never seen in a good light. But Coelho sheds a new light that invokes a deeper sense of understanding towards other individuals. This story does break the stereotype. But this is only one example. There are numerous. Books are made to do things a mortal being couldn't fathom. They begin by breaking the stereotype and helps transcend the reader into a world of possibilities. Rather the antonym of stereotype would be books. They are synonymous to individualism, creativity and most importantly being different than what is the 'typical'. Books break stereotypes is rather an understatement.

Books like Pride and Prejudice helped me to change my views and break the stereotyped perception dwelling in me for some people. Earlier I formed a judgement on people on preconceived notions without personally knowing them and interacting with them thus I could never relish their company and talking with them but after reading this it brought a change in my inner self and I started respecting and talking to everyone from an unbiased angle. It also taught me the definition of self pride.

Books break stereotypes. When one opens a book, he/she disregard of caste, creed, race etc. gets dragged in the world of imagination where everyone''s equal. Whether it''s a voracious reader or a poor man, everyone gets enlightened after reading a book.

Books are indeed a Man''s Best Friend. A very common maxim isn''t it? Well, it is indeed veracious that even the most liberal person shall have had a sense of stereotype for the other on any ground be it as on religion, caste, gender, creed, race or even by their monetary status. However, we must not forget that everyone is internally the same, with the same eyes, nose ,hands etc. Books in this matter invoke the true Human out of a man which aids them to adhere to the Ethics Of Life.

This is done by subjecting them to a virtual world full of real - life emotions that make us humane and further more meticulously ponder within ourselves and expunge the devils out of us . Therefore, it is essential that we indulge in book reading specifically in those of all moral or value- based books and biographies/autobiographies on those who have had reaped a good harvest by adhering to the values and basic human characteristics.

Many of the books act as stereotype breakers and also help to curb the biased mindsets of people. These books contain much of the valuable information and some information about equality among women and men, against untouchablity. This information leaves a deep mark on the mindset of people. Thereby forcing them to change their patriarchal mindset and treat everyone and look everyone equally.

Books help in breaking stereotypes. We all have different perceptions about different things. There are things which we ourselves don''t experience like poverty, gender issues, being new in city, etc. We are merely aware of these things. So, we tend to have a myopic vision about these issues. But when we read books, we not only experience a new way of life, but also get an insight to the reality - through experiences and perceptions of that writer making us realize the actual scenario.

It''s true to say that sometimes the books are big stereotype breakers but that not always the case. So diverting from all the positive things I would like to dwell into the trait here. And the example I would giving would be that of Othello by William Shakespeare. We all know how Othello smothered Desdemona after thought that she has cheating on him even when she wasn''t. And even if she had cheated would she have deserved this fate? Ananya Rai Kendriya Vidyalaya 1 AFS Gurgaon

Most would agree with this but I can''t because and yet our empathy for Othello rests on us believing he would be justified if she had cheated. And the reason we give for this is because he is hot blooded but we must also not forget that he was an outsider and she was his voice in legitimate society. Ananya Rai Kendriya Vidyalay 1 Gurgaon

Ananya Rai Kendriya Vidayalaya 1 AFS

And choosing Othello was what dooms Desdemona- the fact that she''s strong enough to have her own will is the thing that makes him so paranoid and ultimately kills her. So the concluding thought is that the society tries to policing each other and trying to live up to an impossible standard instead of turning our anger on the society that''s telling us to act that way. Books are the portals to an imaginary world of our own. Being an avid book reader, I would say that many characters have helped me break some stereotypes and prejudices that I have come across. Yes,I think books help a person to think differently.A book widens a person''s imagination and thinking too.The best example for this is that when we have to change the mindset of people about the social happenings like gender equality, books have obviously been a part of it.

Yes. Books like''HERO SIZE ZERO ''talks not only about gender inequality but also about the power and emotions of girls. This makes people to learn to break sterotypes. But there are some books that give importance to men.

Aishwarya Iyer Deens Academy

Yes, books do break stereotypes. A good example would be Jane Eyre. Even Hermione. The stereotypes that boks break is usually the common belief that women cannot do as much as men can and that they are inferior to men.

Media is one of the most powerful tools in today''s world. Books posses stories and these stories have endings and actions which often force us to feel in a different way. Books contain language and words which have the power to change ones thinking. They can influence one.

Yes, books do break stereotypes. There is a book ''Motherhood and Patriarchy'' it is about the difficult life of Indian women living in the rural areas. I think if people start reading such amazing books there is definitely going to be some change in their ideology.

Books create an imaginatory world for us. It gives you a look of a different world preventing the cause of stereotypes based on caste, creed, colour, language. We can say books are the antonym of the word stereotype. For example: the book SULTANA''S DREAM written by Rokeya Sakhawat Hussain shows how sarah gets the opportunity to roam in the another world when men had been sent to seclusion. Its not obvious that every book breaks stereotype, but therse are numerous.

Many books blacklist a particular section. But it is not always correct. For example- for a group of rich people misbehaving towards the poor, you just can''t put the blame on the entire category. There are rich men who do extend their helping hand. But in books we often find such wrong views. Well then perhaps that book is helping to break our stereotypes about another issue but it ignites this stereotyped thought on the other hand.

Aadrit Banerjee Apeejay School Salt Lake

It''s clearly evident that I am supporting people who say books sometimes introduce stereotypes rather than breaking them. And hold on, I have some examples to support my views- consider the portion of Little Women where Meg March goes to attend a party at her rich friends house. Even while reading Robin Hood I had a same feeling. And in some books promoting women empowerment, boys are underestimated a lot. Well that shouldn''t be I guess.

Yes,books do break stereotypes. They do make us think differently. When we pick up a book we are drawn into a new world, a world of imagination where there are no restrictions of caste, color, race or creed. We begin to think on our personal level. We start thinking logically breaking the barriers of social prejudices. So some or the other books do help to break stereotypes.

Books introduce us all to a new world that we enjoy to be. We all have come across a book that fights against discrimination, how the lead gets discriminated, but how they fight back with courage! From these kind of books, the readers develops a certain point if view, mostly that discrimination is an ill practise. But there are two sides of a coin, a book may in some way make the reader to discriminate, hence, I think that this depends on the reader him/herself.

Not all, but some books do break stereotypes. Young children whose parents encourage them to read books need to be taught that there are certain facts in the books which may not be true. Books whichencourage the publishing of prejudices and stereotype should be banned, as they build a wrong mind set in the minds of the young tots.

Anika Singh Bhati DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL GURGAON SEC45 D

Books introduce us to another world . A dream world where there is no racism, casteism, stereotypes. When we read a book we just want to go on a wondrous journey with the character irrespective of its religion or gender. We care about knowing the story and getting lost in the character''s world. For instance JKR created another world of Harry Potter. Did any of us wanted to know harry''s religion? No. Books are a portal to a fantasy world that anyone would like to go in.

There are books which break stereotype but also there are many who not, today it''s not many but it will be.as all of us are seeing the things in different way now as earlier it was.as writers write or take an idea what they see in surroundings.but now there we can find change in surroundings so certainly writers writing will also get very much effected.which may go towards stereotype.

The world is what we see and books shows us the most out of it and breaks all stereotypes as no one thinks before opening any book that it has a hindpu author I''ll not read or any thing else.

I do think that books break stereotypes or at least some of them do. Especially the books which have charismatic female protagonists.Books like Harry Potter, Wonder, The Hunger Games, The Book Thief etc are very good examples.

Disha Chopra Delhi Public School, Whitefield

When it comes to books, the ideas presented often depend on the mindset of the author. One factor that decides whether a reader is influenced by that particular mindset is the number of books that person has read and whether they can widen their horizon and accept new ideas. Different authors have different opinions on a particular situation and different interpretations of some research.

Disha Chopra Delhi Public School, Whitefield

So now, if we implement this theory in ''books breaking stereotypes'', the main factor which can make this true is the reader - what kind of an environment the reader lives in, their mindset, ability to adapt to a new idea, etc. a reader who reads a some books on the same topic always has the choice to either scorn books with a different ideology than theirs or broaden their horizon and mingle a number of ideas to make one of their own or simply choose one to believe in.

yes i surely think that books change stereotypes and can also definitely change a person as whatever a person reads in a particular book, he or she is obviously involved in that certain thing and tries and thinks in the same way. many times people do change with the help of books. in fact, books can be used to change a person.hence, books change stereotypes.

We have been awarded with the two most prestigious awards, Times NIE - World’s No.1 NIE program and The Times of India, Student Edition - World’s No.1 Newspaper for the youth in 2006 by the celebrated World Association of Newspapers (WAN). In 2008 we were honoured by the International Newspaper Marketing Association (INMA), yet another international recognition for ‘Youth Audience Development’. In 2013 we were again honoured by the celebrated World Association of Newspapers (WAN) as the ‘Times NIE - World’s Best Youth Engagement Program’.

Times NIE has grown remarkably over the last three and a half decades, touching millions of children across more than 16 Indian cities. Our absolute commitment towards the fledgling generation remains undiluted and our greatest strength lies in the school partnership and commitment.
