The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to scrap from next year the provision of re-evaluation of answer sheets for class XII students. Re-evaluation, introduced by the CBSE in 2014, was the only national school board in the country to offer this facility to students. The ISC Board allows only a re-check or re-addition of marks and examinees do not get to see copies of the answer scripts. While the options of verification of marks (calculation errors) and access to photocopy of evaluated answer scripts will continue, the final stage of re-evaluation (complete check of answers) has been discontinued.
Why this move: CBSE reasoned that a negligible percentage of students actually applied for re-evaluation.
The provision till date: The re-evaluation facility was valid for 11 subjects — English (core and elective), Hindi (core and elective), mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, business studies, economics and accountancy. Under the re-evaluation system, still valid till 2016, a candidate first has to apply for verification of marks, followed by an application for photocopy of the answer sheets. Finally, one can apply for re-evaluation in the above-mentioned subjects. Also, there is a cap on the number of questions a candidate could demand re-evaluation for.
Experts take
The move is not in the interest of students and is likely to face legal challenges. In today’s competitive world, students are highly stressed, they need an opportunity for the re-evaluation of their papers.

In a world where transparency is the keyword, such a move is detrimental and will affect students badly. For instance, this year, a student of our school found out that 16 marks had not been added to his aggregate in a subject when he got the pdf of his answer script during re-evaluation.

Process of re-evaluation ensured transparency in paper checking process. This step will be disappointing for students. Besides, though CBSE’s evaluation process is thorough, chances of human error cannot be ruled out; this will end the scope for rectification process.

Students who apply for re-evaluation are the ones who have hopes that they had done well. This will affect their career aspirations.

The world being as competitive as it is today, it is necessary for one to get as many “proofs” of their victories to get ahead in any field. Stopping re-evaluation will demoralise us.

We have the right to know why our marks were deducted. Besides, there have been cases where students have improved their score through re-evaluation. In class XII , every mark counts and the process of re-evaluation is essential.
Chaavi Singh, class XI, APS, Ahmedabad
Very few cases are re-evaluated since the facility is only used in the rare case when something has actually gone wrong, not because students do not find it useful. It would be unfair to students if re-evaluation is cancelled.
Rushil Pingali, IBDP 1, Podar International School, Mumbai
Re-evaluation is a method by which students get an opportunity to get their papers re-checked in case they find any error in the method of checking. Although only 1.8 per cent of the total students apply for verification of their scores and very few of these are genuine cases, I feel that this method helps deserving students to a great extent. Scrapping it could be detrimental.
