Dalit Quota In Cricket: Can It Work?

Why would we ask such a question, you might wonder! But after a BJP MP called for quota for dalits in cricket, we were compelled to pop this question.

BJP MP from North West Delhi, Udit Raj has demanded reservation to be extended to Dalits in Indian cricket. Speaking to TIMES NOW, Udit Raj has claimed claiming that Dalits have every reason to be part of the game that will immensely benefit India to become the best side in the world.

“I am thinking of this move so that we can fight discrimination. When there are competent and efficient people, I am not sure that they will be selected and will be allowed to play. An example is Vinod Kambli. Out of 35 crore population of India, the talent hunting work begins i think will be the better and the best,” said the BJP MP to TIMES NOW.

“There has been reservation in other countries, for example, in South Africa, the quota for the black community has been hiked to 6, so out of 11 players, six people have to be from the black community. Even with reservation, the South African team is very strong,”
Udit Raj, BJP MP

“What are we talking about? In sport, we talk about excellence, we talk about winning. Those who are asking for quota, they should go back and train people who are not privileged as others,”

Adille Sumariwala, President of the Athletics Federation of India

Former cricketer Saad Bin Jung told TIMES NOW that this is an attempt to divide the country, this time through sports and instead, the government should ensure that every Indian has access to any sporting facility that he or she wishes. “The selection process has no scope of putting someone who is not good enough, because you may end up making a fool out of yourself. Instead, the Sports Ministry should take sport to every part of India and ensure that sporting facilities are available to each and every Indian,” said Saad Bin Jung, former cricketer.

"I support the demand. Many times Indian team loses (matches). So, if it is to win... if there is reservation, it can win. If Dalit players get a chance, it will be good."
Ramdas Athawale, Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment

The selection for the Indian cricket team should be done solely on the basis of talent and ability. There is no need for a separate quota. If a person is talented, their talent will definitely be noticed.

Already there was a quota reservation menace in jobs, now if dalit quota is added to cricket, it would further degrade the quality of sports. Opportunity should be provided on the basis of talent and abilities not on the basis of caste. Hence, the person who is worthy of the position should get an oppurtunity.

It''s a good idea well appreciated. Everyone should get a chance so why not dalits.everyone is equal before the law and should be respected. If a person has a talent he or she should definitely given a chance not only in cricket but in all the sports. The selectors should see the talent not caste.

Quota system may have been introduced to uplift the minorities and weaker sections of the society, but it cannot be denied that this can also deprive more deserving people of their right. I strongly believe that when it is implemented, the quota system must also stay within a decided limit. Others must not be discriminated with respect to this.

Nishi Upadhyay BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

never in a million years , this can''t work. This was the only place for real talent and if quota is there it will only degrade the quality of Indian cricket. Who is the most stupid person who even thought of this ? Why are we so relied on quotas? If anything is not working let''s put reservations. wow! Stop this instead start giving dalits training and facilities. Today dalits are having quota , tomorrow OBCS will ask for it then STs and where would the real talent go?

Onkarpreet Bhavan Vidyalaya

I didn''t get the rationale behind this view. How will quota help improve the performance or standard? How will reservation help the cause? Anyone who has the talent should prove it on their own self? What''s the need for such a priviledge.

Well according to me, this might work to some extent. A separate quota for the Dalits will provide them with an opportunity to take part in cricket and prove their talents. But there should be no compromise in the case of quality. Real talent should be given a chance first. Why to discriminate people on the basis of their religion? The selections for the Indian cricket team should only be done based on the talent of a person. Because going further, it should not degrade the quality of sports.
