Cinema Is Not A Reality, Get Used To This

Filmmaker-producer Mahesh Bhatt was in Delhi to promote his latest film. He tells NIE that it's time for young India to realise that Bollywood and Hollywood are as unreal as they could be.

Q. What is your mind space at the moment?

A. I am happy. Content. Everything is falling into place. Am very excited about my upcoming projects and that keeps me going. Even if all wasn't well, I would still be at peace with myself.

Q. Is that an art?

A. Yes. And everyone should master it sooner than later. Being in peace with oneself will only benefit in the longer run. You will live positively. The way to master this art is to have least expectations from yourself and from people around you.

Q. Tell us something about your journey as a prolific filmmaker

A. I have had a very satisfying journey in filming and writing stories. As a producer too am enjoying my stint. It has been a learning experience as well. Every film I an associated with has left an impression on me. They have all impacted me in some way or the other.

Q. What is your greatest learning experience?

A. The fact that this canvas is unreal. The sooner we all detach from this virtual world, the better it will be for us. Even as audience, people should be aware that this medium is only for story telling. It is not a mirror to the happenings in the society. So dont take movies so seriously.

Q. What tips on filmmaking would you share with budding students?

A. Be aware. You will get stories around you all the time. Second, have the confidence in yourself to achieve what you have dreamt of. Without absolute confidence you are bound to falter.

Q. Do you believe in the saying that failure is the stepping stone?

A. I have lived through that saying. So have my children. They have seen me failing my way to success without ever cribbing about it. That has taught them to be responsible for their actions.

Q. End thoughts...

A. Be yourself. Try hard. And never give up.

No doubt that Mahesh Bhatt is an outstanding filmmaker. But I personally feel that there are numerous factors that influence a person. So, it''s not possible to every time come up with reality.
