Celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi, The Eco-friendly Way!

With river pollution on the rise, how about making it a meaningful Ganesh Chaturthi this year? Here’s how you can make a difference by opting for something different.

Oh fish! Anand Pendharkar of the Sprouts Environmental Trust has created statues made of clay, stuffed with fish-friendly food such as corn, spinach, wheat and vegetable powder.  His team decorates the statues with organic colour such as turmeric, chandan and gerua.

Sweet treat: Designer-turned-baker Rintu Rathod has created chocolate Ganeshas. Upon immersion in milk, they become the perfect recipe for milkshakes, which is distributed in orphanages.

Plant a Ganesha: Mumbai artist Dattadri Kothur creates eco-friendly Ganpati idols from red soil and fertilisers, and contains plant seeds. At the end of the festival, the idols undergo a symbolic immersion. Instead of being submerged in water, the idol is placed in a pot and watered until it dissolves. Thanks to the seeds that are sown in the pot, the idol grows back as a plant.

Did You Know

The idols, made up of toxic material like plaster of Paris, cement, plastic, do not dissolve in water easily creating a layer on the water surface. This layer not only affects flora and fauna but also leads to skin irritation.

I too believe that i we want to worship God we don''t need to offer any such worships. God needs our love and destroying nature is jist similar to disrepecting God because God is present everywhere. So, in order to offer prayers we should opt eco friendly methods so that we can keep our rituals and our nature both together.
