Can Successful Parents Stress You Out?

Everyone has a pressure to do well in life, but it's double for kids who are raised by super-successful parents. Do you agree?

In a recent interview, actress Soha Ali Khan said that it’s “very difficult to compete with superstar parent.” She went onto add, “…Everyone is ready to compare you. Most people want to bring you down. So you will never be able to do well in those comparisons. It's very difficult to compete with a parent who has been a superstar." Even though the 37-year-old actress, who has been noticed for her work in films like ‘Rang De Basanti’, ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’, ‘Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns’ and ‘31st October’,  was referring to the case of kids of superstars, even for general youngsters, there is always a pressure on the youngsters to match or surpass the success of their parents.

How does this assumption work?
  • There is an atmosphere to succeed: It’s assumed that children of prosperous parents are raised in an environment which facilitates success. Your mother is an IAS, your dad is a doctor, and and because you have been brought up by ‘such’ people, it’s expected that even you will do well in life. At least become an engineer from MIT, if not IIT.
  • You have all the resources, and you enjoy a secured life: You go to the best of schools, your parents pay premium for private tuitions, you interact with successful parents (and their peer), and your parents are in full control of how they guide you, which is not the case with everyone else who is growing up with you. This is why you can’t really afford to waste all of this by failing. Basically, you don’t have an excuse to fail.
  • You have to repeat the glory: Kids of prosperous parents have to be prosperous too. There is no logic to it, but that’s how it works. That’s what the society expects. Kids of successful parents cannot fail, or do just okay in their life. Either match or surpass.
  • Difference in parenting outlook: Parents who are too efficacious consider the success of their kids as a proof of their financial, methodological and cultural progression while the other set of parents just look for the validation of their ‘parenting skills’ so ‘success’ is not that much of a priority for them. They rather focus on overall growth.
Should there be such a pressure? Can the success of your parents lead your success too? Does the success of your parents give you an illusion that it’s your success too? Register to post your comments

No there should be no pressure on children. If we keep a lot of expectation from kids there will be an a scare in their mind that whether they can really be successful in it or not..Yes it gives me an illusion that it''s even my success..

Many times the children are expected to inherit all the good values from their parents and become just like that. Yes, the the supreme personality and success of our parents oftwn inspire us to become like them and achieve our goals. But we shouldn''t be pressurized by our parents, after all it''s our own life.

Unfortunately yes, this is followed in today''s world. Suppose a child''s father is a well known and a well educated doctor so automatically the pressure will come on the child''s shoulder that he/she has to become like his/her father otherwise the society will not accept him/her. Everyone should refrain from following this types of illusions.

There are pros and cons for such pressure from super-successful parents. It leads to academic success and glory, but hinders the overall personality development of a child.

Parents pressure can demotivate a child . If parents are scientist and teacher , its because of the freedom they enjoyed to take up the subject they prefer when they were children. So parents should follow what there parents did and give freedom of choice to children .

Mostly this kind of pressure is from "the others " than their own parents . And even if the children of successful parents manage to achieve success , their success is considered nothing because it is assumed that they have inherited their parents'' talents and it should be very easy for them.

Many a times such pressure is applied on students. But i don''t think this is always the same. Most parents expect their children to be successful because they feel that in their time they had no tutions or classes but we have these facilities hence, we have an easy life. This causes parents to have an illusion that their child is supposed to be great. But such pressure should not be applied as it unnecessarily burdens the child.

it is an unknowbn fact that parents'' success pressurises children.

Never,children must not be pressured.

Though it is a fact to agree that there is some kind of extra pressure from the society on children with successful parents to excel in life but the way they are brought up by their parents or the family mindset is the actual mountain of responsibilities. Success off parents certainly does not mean equal success of their children as well. They too have to walk on fire to earn success.

I think the successful parents have a lot more expectations from their kids. They want their kids to be perfect at every thing. They want them to achieve as much as or sometimes even more than what they have achieved. And why not? After all they are parents right! Every parent wants his child to lead a honest and luxurious life.I think that we as children should take these expectations as motivation to achieve success. But these expectations should not pressurise the child to hide his talents.

Its one if the most influential topic..me being going through same( kid if successful parents) undergo the same pressure. This comparison and pressure is not fair since it diminishes the individually of kids and generally its not the parents who pressurize rather their friends who belong to same colleges like IIT or any renowned institute..( in my case)
