Are We Set For A GREEN Diwali This Year?

Supreme Court bans sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR till October 31

To curb the air pollution menace prevalent in Delhi-NCR, the Supreme Court on Monday put a ban on the sale of firecrackers in the National Capital Region till October 31. The apex court’s order came on a plea seeking restoration of the November 2016 order. On Nov 11, 2016, the SC had ordered the suspension of all licences permitting the sale of fireworks, wholesale and retail, within the NCR till further orders. The order was based on a slew of petitions to ban the use of fireworks. Further, the air pollution had become far more severe after Diwali in 2016.

Will it ensure a pollution-free Diwali?

The ban will go a long way in ensuring a pollution-free Diwali. In fact, it will give us an opportunity to celebrate the festival of lights with colourful and bright diyas, that won’t pollute our atmosphere. After all, festivals should spread happiness, not affect our health.

Astha Mohanty, class XII, DPS, Noida

Though a novel move, it needs to be seen how it is implemented. The order should have extended to bursting of crackers as well because people may manage to get them from other  places and burst them.

Anupama Singh, class X, Indus Valley School, Noida

There is much more to Diwali than burning firecrackers. Though it may disappoint some, who can't think of cracker-free festivities, it will help in reducing pollution.

Sanika Deshpande, class XII, Ryan International School, Noida

The move will help in making Delhi clean and green. It will also prevent accidents. More important, it will be  a respite for animals as well whichhave a tough time during Diwali.

Dawn Carmel Blankley, class IX,
United International School, Bengaluru

Unless executed properly, the ban on sale of firecrackers will not be successful. The silver lining is that most kids these days are very sensitive towards the environment and causes like pollution control, so they take these rulings seriously.

Latika Menon, teacher, Vasant Valley International, New Delhi

A blanket ban on sale of fire crackers is not pragmatic, as the sentiments of people at large are at stake, but from an environmental point of view, it will control pollution and should be extended to other parts of the country.

Sunjoy Monga, environmentalist

Cities across India have heavy vehicular pollution; crackers only add to the mess. By banning crackers, we are ensuring that we do not add particulate matter, sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen, the major polluters in this season to the air. Other states too must join in.

S Nanda Kumar, former chief environment officer, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Bengaluru

A ban on crackers is not a practical move as they are a part of Diwali celebrations and people should not be deprived of their merrymaking.  Instead, the government should check the contents of crackers  and ensure the sale of toxic–free crackers and monitor their movement.

CM Joy, environmentalist, Kochi

In our country where education is spreading like an disease so more and more people are getting concerned towards the environment. Since, the curiosity towards the firecrackers (which are mostly burnt during Diwali)among the people is going lower every year.So it can be calculated that this year it can be a GREEN Diwali

P.S Geethanjali Nalanda Vidya Niketan, Vijayawada

Not only in Delhi, Firecrackers must be banned in other cities too. First, People must stop the use of foreign firecrackers and next they should reduce the amount of fireworks they burn. Gradually, they should completely stop burning them. Eventually it will be a green Diwali.
