Are We Ready For Women Superheroes? Discuss

Do You Think We Are Ready To Accept Women Superheroes?

Yes: 93%

No: 7%

Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan recently said that the "Indian audience would never accept a female superhero" and this is the reason why we don't see many movies where the female lead is a superhero. "It's a different thing when a man sports such awe-inspiring powers. I think our audience is not ready to accept women as superheroes! Not yet," said Roshan.

Other Directors Boo!

According to director Ayan Mukherjee, this statement is false and reeks of the patriarchal mindset that most Indians have. "I would love to make a movie with a woman as a superhero. We have not had many such films before because we don't have the technology to actress performing stunts. It is not because the audience is not ready to accept a woman performing martial arts and donning the costume of a super hero," he said.

Mahesh Bhatt tells you that the Indian mythology is proof that women were the original superheroes. "Speaking of Hindu mythology, we worship Durga and Kali who are symbols of ultimate power. Do you really think that as a population, we haven't accepted them? Of course, we have! If we are celebrating a Durga who has powers of destruction; why cannot our audience accept artists donning the hat of a superhero?," he queries.

Comics Have Had Women Superheroes

India has always had women displaying powers of the superhero. Remember Shakti, Pralayanka, Black Cat or Chandika from Raj Comics? These characters were epitome of strength, will power and possessed powers that were unheard of. Comics have a limited audience as compared to the movies. If that limited audience is considered as a sample for a pilot survey, then the acceptance of female superheroes becomes evident.

Does The Audience of Superhero Movies Make This Distinction?

People go for the thrill that these movies have to offer. The stunts, the action and the awe is what interests them. They really don't care if there's a man delivering it or a woman hitting the bad guys.

Hollywood is a bright example - Movies which had solo-male superheroes made Rs 5000 crore; while movies featuring Super Girl, Catwoman, Black Widow, Wonder Woman, Mystique, Storm and Gamora made a robust revenue in the order of Rs 9000 crore and more.

Youth Reporters Say The Statement Is Absurd

Rakesh Roshan has not read the pulse of the Indian audience. Women superheroes are the ones who bring spark to the character. Black Widow, for instance, has a different charisma. Would love to see a Hindi version of her.

Ashwin Dasgupta, class XI, DPS International, Kolkata

Women add that extra glitz to the super hero character which gives them an edge over their male counterparts. Also, what role does gender have to play in such movies? At the end of the day, if the bad guys are defeated, the purpose is solved.

Aditi Rohtagi, class XII, Vishwa Bharati Public School

Just goes to show the mindset of men who don't want to see women in powerful positions. They feel threatened that their status is being compromised. But the times are changing, the audience is more than happy with women taking centre stage in all matters. Bring it on, Desi women superheroes.

Mohan Lal, class X, Amity International School

Like it or not, women superheroes in Bollywood may look strange in the movies. Let's face it; our actors don't have the body, nor the agility to carry it off. In Hollywood, actors look the part they play. But in India, I have serious doubts.

Swastik Desai, class XI, Mumbai

It's not the audience but the producers who won't buy women as superheroes in Bollywood. Unless there is a decent budget allocated to such movies, technology and screenplay will suffer. As a result, the movie will flop. Not the problem of audience acceptance.

Ritika Bhasin, class X, Somerville, Delhi

I would love to see Bollywood churn out a woman superhero but I doubt that mega stars will sign the dotted line. Our movie stars only want to stick to safe roles which will assure them of a good pay package. Won't blame them entirely because I think our scripts are found wanting too.

Yes, we should appreciate the women as super heroes . We are living in a world where women have touched the sky with their handwork, simplicity and politeness. I would like to mention a few women who inspired me. 1. Mary Kom: 2. Legendary Indian Boxer Harshini Kanhekar : 3.Daredevil Fire-Woman. India''s first female firefighter: 4.Puja Thakur: Wing Commander in the Indian Air Force Arunima Sinha: 5.The National Volleyball Player Who Conquered Mount Everest:

The word ''hero'' has always been associated with ''man''. It is high time we acknowledge the truth that is already present before us. Women are equal to men and they deserve equal representation. We have had women scale great heights. Donning her in a cape all the more makes sense. Women superheroes would engrave in the mind of young and alike the certitude of building a better world. Women superheroes are the way to go.

Harini MS NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

Women superheroes would be a promotion of women empowerment, and would encourage fenale viewers to rise above what other people say. It is a good idea indeed.

Pallavi singh PRESENTATION CONVENT(RED FORT)

Yes I think it will be a good move to take women superheroes as it will swipe away the image of women as helpless, soft and submissive creature who always needs a man for her protection. It will also promote women empowerment. It will also bring a revolution in comic stories.

Onkarpreet Bhavan Vidyalaya

Of course we all should be ready for women superheroes. And why not? In the present era, comics and T.V. shows are generally dominated by male superheroes. It would be rally good to see some SUPERWOMEN on television. This will be a proof that our society is expanding horizons, and breaking orthodox ideas. A definitely welcome move, indeed.

Om Badiyani Sandipani

Yes, there should be woman heroes. this will encourage women.

V.A.Tanmai PBDAV MODEL SCHOOL

Women are no more less than men.I think Women heroes will be a good inspiration to the youth than Men. Female superheroes are vital characters that represent a growing segment of comic book readership.Women have more patience and are more stronger than Men so it will be a better idea if Women heroes are described in the comic.

Aditi Sahi D C MODEL SCH PKL-SEC-7

Isn''t is absurd if we talk about society working towards women empowerment and not accepting women superheros. We are really ready for women superheros.I would rather prefer the name superheros than super beings.

R.Y.Lohitha Mahindra World School

Yes! I would love to have women super heroes . This would be a new change and students would like it.I would surely love to read such a book .

Shubhangi Sharma RYAN INTL. ROHINI ROHINI

Why not? Women are the doer of day to day challenging tasks. She''s a mother, sister, wife, daughter, aunt etc. And she is expected to mantain her integrity in each field. WUe worship several dieties like Durga,Sita etc. Aren''t they superwomans? Egyptian mythology also mentions many such powerful women. What Rakesh Roshan said is totally absurd and unjustified. The awe inspiring powers of superwomen have been proved by wonderwoman, shakti, black cat and Supergirl.

Snegha.L Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Yup,personally I am eagerly awaiting for a hit film which may bring real superwomen to the society.

Sanjula Gupta BHAWAN VIDYALAYA CHD-SEC-27

Such statements are absurd. Of course, the Indian society is ready for female superheroes! Infact, such a movie would garner alot of interest and curiosity.

Ritvik Baweja Bal Bharati Public School

Of course it''s time that we should pave way in our mind and break all the stereotypes and accept the women superheroes.

Sharmeen Khan PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

Yes. We surely have to be ready for women superheroes. Women in India are rising to the space. Its high time we change our mindsets. The bollywood industry has to move on from the weak and cute characters for girls. Today we are moving with the world and to be in competition with it we have to change our age old thinking. And directors, who play an important role in shaping the society have to realise their responsibilities.

Darshil Shah ST. XAVIERS - LOYOLLA -2 LOYOLLA 2

We have saw enough of male super heroes in various movies. Making movies of female super heroes will create a widespread enthusiastic mood among the public. So it will be a big achievement ro the film industry by including female super heroes.

Sarath Kumar RM Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Riya Pandey Childrens academy

We live in the society of change and we must accept the fact that it is women who are going to bring the change and rejuvenate the present day society. Beside that. undoubtedly we should rename to Superbeings as it will help create equality and change the mindset that only men can be superheroes.

Niamat Dhillon Navy Children School - Colaba, Mumbai.

Priyanshi Kar HIRANANDANI FOUNDATION SCHL

Women and men are equal. Books have women heroes, Hollywood has women superheroes.... And in real life there are so many women who have save people....saved the world... Bollywood has also had many women superheroes. So why can''t we accept them as superheroes Names: Batwoman Iron woman Superwoman We each have different opinions and this is mine

G. Abishek Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

I''m on the opposition side of Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan''s opinion. Nowadays people are bored to see male superheroes. Women superheroes like Wonder Woman and Black Widow have been a great change in this situations.

Ambuja Rani Ryan International School

YES , FOR SURE .In Harry Potter series actually Hermione was perfect for a superhero role but just because boys won''t like it ,it was Harry.
