Are NCERT Books Sufficient For Students?

Or reference books are a necessity if you want to do well in exams?  Let’s find out…

In April this year, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a circular to all its affiliated schools, asking them to make sure that the students are not forced to use books other than those prescribed by the NCERT (National Council Of Educational Research And Training).

"For students from classes IX to XII the NCERT books are compulsory, while students of junior classes may refer other books as well. We are making sure that the students are not forced to buy books other than that of NCERT. However, it is optional for students to refer to other books," said Indore Sahodaya CBSE school complex, chairman, Manoj Bajpai.

But, NCERT must answer this: Why in this years’ board examination, the questions featured were from outside of syllabus? "The HRD ministry as well as the CBSE duly and continuously force the students to focus on NCERT books for preparation of examinations. But this time 90% of the mathematics question paper of Ajmer region was not according to NCERT books," stated Shrishti Jain, a class 12 student from the city, in a letter to the PM.

The NCERT must not repeat this fiasco in the future. But that aside, are NCERT books more than enough or reference books are a necessity if you want to do well in exams?

Supplement books helps in better understanding of the subject

Most of students read the NCERT books thoroughly but still reach out for reference books to better grasp the subject and enhance their knowledge. “As a student who has been a part of the pre-CCE (Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation) and post-CCE era, I personally feel that students need to use supplement books. NCERT textbooks are strictly according to the exam patterns and not about expansion of knowledge.  So, it becomes a necessity to use reference books for better understanding, more clarity and extra knowledge, said  S. Sushmitha, class X, D.A.V. Public School, Thane.

A teacher also said that “students must not hesitate from referring to guide books if some concepts, especially in Physics and Maths need more explanation.”

There are others who feel that NCERT books are sufficient till class IX but after that as the concepts and syllabus gets wider and complex, the reference books come in handy. Also “for exams and olympiads conducted by other foundations, NCERT books may not be enough and external study material may be required,” says Sarthak Rao, class X, DAV Public School, Mumbai. Moreover, apart from books by various private publishers there is interesting audio-visual content easily available in market. Some argue that “It makes the process of understanding a concept/subject more fun and entertaining.”

But no one should belittle the importance of NCERT books. In the competitive exams — such as IAS—many questions are based on NCERT syllabus. Having said that, NCERT must make the study material more appealing for students. They should benchmark their books against the private publications to know what they are lacking. Till such time, students will have no option but to reach out for supplement material.

Well it''s students wish whether to choose NCERT or any other reference book. For instance, when we take NEET exam student can''t choose matriculation syllabus but they should adapt for NCERT and other reference book. While when we look onto CBSE student in their examination i believe most of the question may be out of the book but not out of the concept. If we are thorough in concept then we should not worry about study materials :) .

Ritvik Baweja Bal Bharati Public School

For a child to get more exposure to the higher studies reference books become an necessity. The information contained in the NCERT is limited to the current syllabus only, if a child aspires to study extra and of a higher level then he must buy reference books. They help i making the competitive exams easier too. But while studying from reference book we must ensure that we are side-by side completing our NCERT textbook also.

Khushi Sharma BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

NCERT''s are not sufficient in many cases. They are the perfect books for concept clarity but for important additional knowledge one has to refer the refreshers. NCERT''s should provide all the essential information related to the topic in an elaborated manner.

DIWANSHI SHETIJA BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

NCERT books are the base of higher studies,it is single path through which students learn new concepts easily and more efficiently. It is customarily stated by the teachers that examination pattern is entirely based on these books. They also claim that students should refer extra books too. This is a dilemma faced by each student except the bookworms. CBSE should definitely clarify this concept to students so that they can learn better without any confusions.

Bhavana Jaison Atomic Energy Central School No 2

Education should be to acquire knowledge and make the concept clear . Books should not be a matter . Some children may be comfortable with NCERT , some may find it difficult to follow. Government should strict with syllabus not the book which children should follow.

Harini MS NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

NCERT books are mostly not revised. This is my first year in CBSE, and I''ve already been advised by teachers to refer other publishers'' books rather than NCERT. Coming to whether these reference books are being overused, I think if textbooks aren''t revised, a student has to option but to refer other books for their exams.

I think it depends on our understanding. If we have the ability to form a number of questions out of the text then we''ll definitely pass with flying colours without the help of guides. All that matters is the building up of concept

NCERT books contain little subjects in elaborate manner whereas other books contain many subjects in simple manner. But it is important to mark that even students learn little subjects they get complete understanding. This is the situation where NCERT books stand ahead in developing the minds of young generations than other books. So people are more dependent on these books to get more knowledge to tackle competative exams.

the student ultimately has to see what is for his benefit and thus using revised books is good

Well, I think that NCERT books strongly require a change. Often the text or the statistics stand out to be erroneous. Secondly, the information is limited. Other books such as Dinesh or S.Chand explain the same topic in detail which benefits a student going for NTSE and other competitive exams. Thirdly, I think the books should have proper headings. I often get confused as so much text is given under one topic.

Hiya Kilam global indian internatonal school

It is a personal choice. The students who prefer NCERT books should purchase them and the students who prefer other reference books such as Oxford, Madhuban etc can purchase them. However, I think that reference books provide more information than NCERT books. NCERT books also have many errors and not many exercises in the textbook for practice. However, NCERT books can be very useful for board exams.

Kirti gupta BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (SWASTHYA VHR)

Usage of ncert books should be mandatory but the abolition of refrence book from curriculum can become a stone in path of future of a student because after entering into a competitive world after 12th we will not be able face the various challenges of world or manage with the heavy work load .

NCERT restricts the knowledge to the syllabus. To gain detailed knowledge, a child should refer books of ICSE and IGCSE.

Ultimately, to clear competitive exams students are very much dependent on the reference books like NCERT books. These books give the students lot of understanding.

Kashish Verma Bharti Public School Swasthya Vihar

According to me, NCERT books are not at all sufficient. And their data has not been updated since many years. There are many theories which are given in the book which have been proved wrong but are still there in the books for the students to study.

Rajathariga S P AECS MAGNOLIA MARUTHI PUB SCH

I have just recently taken up the CBSE curriculum for my 11th standard. I find the NCERT books are not sufficient. They really do not dwell much on basics. This makes it difficult to understand some new concepts. Therefore I have to use various other reference books.

Yashna Arora GD Goenka Public School,Model town

The question raised is entirely subjective.I would say that the NCERT books provide enough for a student to fair well in exams,at least till 10th grade. However, when talking about pragmatic knowledge about a subject ,NCERT falls short, gravely short. The books provide almost everything one needs to know for the examinationsno less and certainly no more! For genuine knowledge about something one needs to delve deeper and beyond what''s inside NCERT,which would require one to seek additonal supp

Onkarpreet Bhavan Vidyalaya

I think it all varies from person to person. Someone, who has a complete understanding of the concept , won''t want any other reference book. On the other hand, if someone lacks in some concept, NCERT won''t be helpful there. The NCERT books are precise and compact in their content. If someone wants a better expanded version of the content, why not go for reference books?

ADEEN ASHFAQUE WAGLE MARY IMMACULATE GIRLS SCH-S CRUZ(E)

It is always better to study from the textbook during exams, but it is also necessary to understand the concepts given in the textbooks. Supplement books like digests or guides help students understand the concepts in the textbook which makes studying easier. The choice should be left up to the students, giving them the freedom to decide whether the school work, textbook syllabus and the teachers'' explanation of the concept is enough to help them pass the exams or not.

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

I agree that taking supplement books is necessary to do well in exams. We all are familiar with the fact that NCERT books just give brief introduction of the topic. In order to understand the concept, it is necessary to take help from other books. Also, supplement books have a variety of questions that helps in understanding the concept further.

Humera Naaz St. Anthony Girls Sr. Sec. School

Ncert bools are not at all enough for the students. Students studying in XI or XII have to start prepare for competative exams and for that ncert books are not at all complete. Students have to buy a refrence book for explanation of topics for the competition level & for practise of extra questions. Humera Naaz XI St. Anthony school, Delhi

Priyanshu Mohta Maxfort School - Rohini

Not only NCERT but any book is not sufficient itself. All topics of every chapter cannot be covered in detail in any book including NCERT. Every book has something extra or it might explain some other topic in detail. So having multiple books to refer to helps understand any topic better.

Aadrit Banerjee Apeejay School Salt Lake

I think, supplement books are necessary besides NCERT books to do well in exams. It not only helps a student to perform well but it also helps the students to expand themselves and gain more knowledge about a particular topic. Often the points in NCERT books are not explained properly. However doing well in exams depends upon individuals. There are some who are doing academically very well by reading only NCERT books and some who aren''t doing that well by studying hundreds of books.

ANWESHA DAS Delhi public school Kalyanpur

The NCERT has a standard that is expected out of every student. However, every student is not the same and have different intellectual levels. The NCERT should be made the base of school studies along with other reference books based on the standard of the student. I think, to do well in exams, you need to know in and out of the subject and hence, reference books other than NCERT should be helpful.

Mayank Seth Anandram Jaipuria School

If a student wants to excel in a particular subject which the student wants to study in his / she career than reference books are a must . But, if a student has to achieve success in an extra curricular activity then NCERT books are sufficient as questions in board exams are mostly from NCERT .

MEDHA PANDE VISHWA BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL

Ncert books are more or less inadequate though they explain the given topic clearly but if we want better scores, we mostly prefer reference books.

Tanishq Gupta BAL BHARTI PUBLIC SCHOOL (PITAM PUR

Pretty much, the content in NCERT books, is limited. For competitive exams, NCERT doesn''t offer a wide outlook of knowledge and information for those who mean to clear away these exams. Here, reference books are to the rescue. NCERT restricts the knowledge to current syllabus in the easiest way. But, if we''re adapting to the reference books to help with exam material, it should be made sure on our end to keep a tab on and revise the NCERT books.

Bhavesh HAPPY MODEL SCHOOL(JANAKPURI)

It''s students whether they choose NCERT book or any reference book. In NCERT book most of the questions are out of the book but not out of the concept. For different exams different books are used, like for CBSE student have to study from NCERT book and any other reference book for some more questions as practice
