All That Will Be Hot In 2017...Globally

The world will be watching Jack Sparrow back on the big screen, listening to Depeche Mode and wearing leopard print and reading a new book by Brooklyn Beckham.

What else will be the talk of the town in 2017.
MUSIC
A lot of big names are back. U2 will return to their glory days by touring their 1980s classic 'The Joshua Tree'. Basildon's finest Depeche Mode will tour and release new album 'Spirit', while German electro pioneers Kraftwerk's UK tour will be a hot ticket. And the one and only architect of rock 'n' roll Chuck Berry will release Chuck - his first album in 38 years.

Meanwhile, Sir Elton John turns 70 and celebrates 50 years with songwriting partner Bernie Taupin. Bruce Springsteen takes a diversion from the E Street Band with an as-yet untitled strings-accompanied solo album. And hotly tipped firsttimer Rag'n'Bone Man may emerge as a new Boss or, just as easily, head straight to the scrap yard. Watch this space.

TECH
Voice-activated chatbots are the new battleground for tech companies, with Amazon Alexa (top), Apple Siri, Microsoft Cortana and Google Assistant all vying to become your virtual personal assistant in 2017. As they become integrated into more devices around the home, and artificial intelligence improves, people will start to see them as a more intuitive way to access services than tapping on a screen.

Virtual reality technology is finally ready to hit the mainstream, thanks to the likes of Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR. Meanwhile, augmented reality - which went out of fashion after Google Glass failed to catch on - is having a resurgence thanks to the huge success of Pokemon Go.

Here is a look at iPhone 1, 4, 5 and iPhone 6 Plus. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of the first iPhone, and Apple is expected to mark the occasion with a major overhaul of its flagship smartphone. While Samsung will be working overtime to recover from the fiasco of exploding batteries in its Galaxy Note 7.

SPORTS

Dhoni has already stepped down as ODI captain, so we have some action already on the pitch. The year will kick off with Andy Murray looking to add the Australian Open to his tennis honours list and end with England's cricket team going Down Under to defend the Ashes.

MOTORING

Despite Brexit, it's pretty likely the UK will stick with EU regulations on building and selling cars - we'll keep to EU emissions standards, for example.  Self-driving cars like Google's will continue to be a hot topic, with more systems coming on the market and fitted to more affordable cars. Using mobiles while driving will fuel debate but it could widen out to a discussion on distractions as a whole, including complicated infotainment systems.

MOVIES
Johnny Depp sets sail for the fifth time as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge, with Orlando Bloom press-ganged back into the crew. The apes mean business in War for the Planet of the Apes, while Tom Hiddleston has a hairy safari experience in Kong: Skull Island.
Everyone's favourite minions return in June to cause cartoon chaos for not-so-evil master Gru in Despicable Me 3. There's more animated fun in July when Cars 3 roars into town. Wonder Woman's solo adventure in June sees the Amazon princess fight in the First World War, before she teams up again with the Caped Crusader in Justice League in November.

Rival superhero studio Marvel has Iron Man mentoring the new Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming, while Asgardian deity Thor partners Benedict Cumberbatch's Dr Strange in Thor 3: Ragnarok. The Force is strong in December when Star Wars: Episode VIII arrives, and the Barden Bellas finish the year on a harmonious high in the all-singing comedy sequel, PerfecPitch 3.

BOOKS
There will be novels from famous names, including Wilbur Smith, Bernard Cornwell, Paula Hawkins, Dan Brown and Jo Nesbo, as well as a raft of female fiction from Jane Fallon, Katie Fforde, Sophie Kinsella and Joanna Trollope. Celebrities entering the mix include Brooklyn Beckham, who is releasing his debut photography book What I See; Kate Garraway with a book on ageing called The Joy of Big Knickers, above; and Liza Tarbuck's "annual for grown-ups", I Am Distracted by Everything. There will also be a flurry of new books to mark 100 years since the Russian Revolution, and gardening books are likely to bloom in popularity, too.

FASHION

Last year was Gigi Hadid's, but 2017 may well be the year of younger sister Bella, who recently debuted on the ramp. When it comes to trends to watch, metallics will be shining into the new year and, of course, it wouldn't be spring without a beautiful bloom or two. Alexander McQueen's collection set hearts racing with beautiful bouquets. The plentiful prints don't stop there. Wear your stripes in any style, race around in leopard, go mad for monochrome zebras, and get some grown-up gingham.
Be ready to cinch up, too, as belts and buckles take centre stage for spring - a trend we can all try. But if you fancy a little flounce to put a spring in your step, just add a sprinkling of feathers. Hello S/S17.
