Alert: CO2 At All-time High In Human History

CO2 levels in the atmosphere have surged past a significantly dangerous threshold and may not climb down for “generations” despite environmental action

The 400 parts per million benchmark was broken globally for the first time in recorded history last year. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says 2016 will probably be the first full year to exceed the mark. The spike can be partly attributed to a strong El Niño event.

THE EL NINO LINK
  • El Niño triggered drought conditions in tropical regions. This meant that vegetation was able to absorb less CO2
  • Drier conditions sparked fires and these led to extra emissions

HOW SERIOUS?
  • Monitored at the atmospheric monitoring station in Mauna Loa, Hawaii: the CO2 count was 400 parts per million or 400 molecules of CO2 for every 1m molecules in atmosphere
  • The last time CO2 was consistently this high was 3m to 5m years ago
  • Before 1800, atmospheric levels were around 280ppm, experts say

DOES THE EL NINO EFFECT PERSIST?
No, El Niño factor has disappeared for now
  • Modern humans, who evolved in Africa only about 200,000 years ago, have never lived under such high atmospheric carbon dioxide levels
  • Although 2016 is the first full year when the entire world crossed the 400ppm threshold for CO2, isolated places have breached the mark in the past few years. It was recorded over the Arctic in 2012, and at Mauna Loa in 2013

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
  • While 2015 ushered in an era of optimism and climate action with the Paris climate change agreement, it also marks a new era of climate change reality with record high greenhouse gas concentrations
  • Other greenhouse gases, including methane and nitrous oxide, have been growing alarmingly
  • nLast year, methane levels were 2.5 times greater than in the pre-industrial era that started around 1800
  • Nitrous oxide was 1.2 times above the historic measure
  • The study points to the impact of these increased concentrations of warming gases on the world’s climate

Your blood vessels are under threat...

Exposure to fine particulate matter may cause blood vessel damage and inflammation among adults, says a study

That the air we breathe is not as healthy as we may want it to be, but also the everyday realisation that’s being meted out to us in the form various studies is something too hard to digest. Recent study by researchers examined the component of air pollution known as fine particulate matter (PM2.5) – the tiny pieces of solid or liquid pollution emitted from motor vehicles, factories, power plants, fires and smoking.

They found that periodic exposure to fine particulate matter was associated with several abnormal changes in the blood that are markers for cardiovascular disease. With the rise in air pollution, small, micro-particles indicating cell injury and death were found significantly higher in number; levels of proteins that inhibit blood vessel growth increased; and proteins that signify blood-vessel inflammation also showed significant increased.

"These findings suggest that living in a polluted environment could promote the development of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke more pervasively and at an earlier stage than previously thought," said Aruni Bhatnagar, professor at the University of Louisville in the US.

Study participants included 72 healthy, non-smoking, adults. Their average age was 23, most were white, and more than half were male. During the winter of 2013, 2014, and 2015, participants were provided blood samples, which researchers then tested for markers of cardiovascular disease. The blood markers were evaluated with different levels of air pollution. The study was published in the journal Circulation Research. PTI

Surprised after reading this. After reading the article In the science class today some of us are planning to do a PowerPoint presentation on the topic and a conduct a session on the same the following Monday to proliferate awareness.

Really! all these things are thought provoking. I think after reading this article every youth reporter of this site including me would like to do something in a way we can minimise and reduce this. I am not able to understand that why despite intensified campaigning by Times NIE group, we are hearing this situation. Guys from this platformI would like to appeal that really this is the time when we should do something we the citizens of India, winds of change must act forward in this direction

We really need to do something drastic before it is too late. It is now or never.

The emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is going out of hand. We must develop new technologies in different areas such as energy and transportation which reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. It''s still possible to reduce Carbon dioxide and air pollution as well as the Earth in peril before it''s too late.
