75 Years of Quit India: How Patriotic Are You?

History has a lot to tell us about our freedom struggle. The stories of the relentless battle that our forefathers fought to free our country from the British has been passed on to us year after year. However, the entire concept of patriotism and nationalism has been blurring in the wake of recent incidents of brutality that have disturbed the nation. In order to truly imbibe from our history, we as a country have to first blur the differences between us on the basis of caste, colour, creed, feel experts.

“If we’re truly patriotic then the caste system, gender injustice should have been eliminated long before,” says leading cultural commentator Sadanand Menon. “The only yardstick to define patriotism is by utilising your citizenship in the right way. You have the right to constitutionally challenge the doing or undoing of your system of governance. If you do that truly and courageously, you are a genuine patriot,” says Menon adding that holding national flag or standing up for national anthem are manufactured sentiments.

Times NIE students and teachers tell us what patriotism means to them and whether it creates boundaries between nation and the world...

Patriotism is more than the goosebumps you feel while singing the national anthem. It is our actions as the citizen of the country. Patriotism is how we uphold the constitution of the nation, and treat other Indians with equal respect. Patriotism for the nation should manifest itself into love and loyalty toward all of humanity.

Zahabiya Kutubuddin, class VIII, Sacred Heart Matriculation, Chennai

Patriotism to me can be for one’s own country as well as for the whole world. If all nations preach and practice peace, then there wouldn’t be any concept of boundaries. Knowing what our forefathers went through, it is pertinent to attain freedom from colonisation.

Krishna Desikan, class X, The Orbis School, Pune

Patriotism to me is putting national interest above your self or communal interests. When we understand the importance of our nation, we learn to respect its governance, history and put it above ourselves. True patriotism calls upon people to show the value of the nation to the international community. The skewed version of patrotism disassociate the country and the world.

Daksh Walia, class XI, Bhavan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh

Patriotism is the absolute pride in being part of an accomplished nation. It means we take pride in being a part of a diverse country within a global community. The moment patriotism reaches its extreme and we start thinking we are better than the rest, it turns into aggressive nationalism.

Zoe Rita Patrick, class XII, Bishop Cotton Girl’s School, Bengaluru

The literal meaning of patriotism is vigorous support for one's country. But to me, patriotism is more than support. It is taking pride in one's nationality, contributing in a holistic manner towards creating a nation that is independent, glorious, and proud. Patriotism is often mistaken for creating boundaries between the nation and the world. Instead of being oblivious of the other nations. One should learn from each other and not simply love your own.

Shreya Hande, class X, Abhinav Vidyalaya, Pune

Patriotism involves the feeling of being a part of country's progress and contributing to it. It is not a matter of obsession as we can be patriotic and still have a holistic approach towards the issues of the world. Patriotism to me is a genuine love for our country.

Rasvi Maligi, class IX, VVS SPHS, Bengaluru

Patriotism to me is a competition between India and other countries to make the world a better place to live in. There should be a competition between countries which would lead to creation of innovative ideas. It will only encourage the countries to do good things and develop good relations with other countries.

Tanay Patil, class X, Hansraj Morarji Public School, Andheri (W), Mumbai

Patriotism means serving the country. The people of a country make it how it is and I believing in serving our people better. I think it strengthens your love for humanity rather than create boundaries.

Dhanvi Shah, class VIII, Gopi Birla Memorial School, Mumbai

Patriotism is an emotion that cannot be conveyed in words. It is a feeling that grows in our soul. I don't think it creates boundaries between nation and the world if you love other countries as much as you love your own. But going overboard with emotions can cause differences between what we perceive of other nations.

Ishika Gupta, class X, SD Public School, Delhi

Patriotism to me can be for one's own country as well as for the whole world. Love for one's own motherland does not mean hate others'. If all nations of the world preach and practice peace, then there wouldn't be any concept of boundaries. All can work together for the betterment of the world. Knowing what our forefathers went through, it is pertinent to attain freedom from colonization.

Krishna Desikan, class X, The Orbis School, Pune

People need to understand the difference between patriotism and ultra-nationalism. Patriotism to me means loving our country unconditionally but also working on improving it. Patriotism doesn’t mean creation of boundaries, which is what ultra-nationalism does. So, everything is all right if you don’t bring down someone else’s national identity while trying to polish you own.

Rajarshi Roy, Class XII, St. Xavier's Collegiate School, Kolkata

Patriotism to me means feeling proud of one’s nation, respecting and loving our country above everything else in spite of the shortcomings and also, being proud of whatever we have achieved and accomplished. The question of boundaries doesn't arise so long as you respect each other’s national identity.

Ishita Sen, Teacher, Mahadevi Birla World Academy, Kolkata

Patriotism is not merely a passive love for the country. A patriot not only loves his own country but also loves other nations as his own and desires to live in peace with them. Patriotism focuses on removing barriers between the nation and the world. Nations are to first run together, and then patriotism and nationalism can be distinguished in terms of the strength of love and special concern one feels for it.

Nancy Dutta, English teacher, Kundan International School, Chandigarh
