6 Politically Controversial Tamil Films

The Tamil film Mersal created a controversy when its hero Vijay mocked digital economy and GST. But Tamil cinema has always been political. Here are a few films that critiqued politics and society in many ways:

Ore Oru Graamathiley (Once Upon a Time in a Village)

The1989 film criticised caste-based reservations. It got a “U" certificate but a group of people moved the Madras HC which restrained the film's exhibition. The SC reversed it in a landmark order: “Freedom of expression protects not merely ideas that are accepted but those that offend, shock or disturb the state or any sector of the population."

Parasakthi (Goddess of Limitless Power)
The 1952 film saw the debut of Sivaji Ganesan. The title song by Bharathidasan called for a sovereign Dravidian nation. The screenplay and dialogue by M Karunanidhi packed a punch and became the mouthpiece of the DMK. Its portrayal of Hindu customs and Brahmins caused an outrage.

Mohammad bin Tughlaq (1971)
Cho Ramaswamy's biting satire. Mohammad bin Tughlaq and his accomplice Ibn Battuta are found to be alive in 1971, thanks to a magical herb. Tughlaq returns to a rousing reception, mocks at the country's progress, fights a by-election, becomes the prime minister with the support of MPs, all of whom are made deputy prime ministers. The film anticipated Emergency in a cheesy, Cho kind of way.

(The King of Torture, Pulikesi the 23rd)
The 2006 film by Vadivelu is historical fiction set in the late 18th century but it talks about globalisation, corporatisation and even takes a dig at soft drinks majors like Coca-Cola and Pepsi which are satirised as “Akka Mala“ and “Gup-C“ respectively.

Joker
A 2016 satire about a villager who proclaims himself as the president of India and takes on every social ill, including lack of toilets. Is it laughing at Swachh Bharat or promoting it? Like any good satire, it leaves the interpretation to the viewer.

Mersal was really carried well . It brought out the issues of the common people . I also remember that Vijay''s KATHI also brought out the important issues of the farmers .Tamil nadu film industry is putting great efforts to bring out the reality scenario of the people . I am really worried about the issues of Tamil nadu . The most important issue is OPS OR EPS . And I am literally shocked when minister dindugal Srinivasan said the prime minister of India is Manmohan singh .......
