6 Eco-Friendly Substitutes For Plastic Bags

The widespread use of plastic in the world has led to changes that are proving life-threatening. A life that depends on plastic cannot breathe without it let alone carry groceries. But the more plastic it uses, the more out-of-breath it runs. Can't you see? While France became the first nation to completely ban the various uses of plastic, other nations have begun walking on that path albeit slowly. Plastic bags, especially, are an intrinsic part of our life but the usage comes at such a cost that we will all find extremely hard to pay off.

But it's never too late to make a change. We bring you 7 alternatives to plastic bags that will give you a healthier option to breathe and win at life.

1. Denim bags

Easy to find, denim bags can easily become the next big rage in lieu of plastic bags. They are durable, easy to carry, and are available in a range of shapes and sizes. Because denim can easily be recycled, you can put an old pair of jeans to good use by getting them stitched as bags.

2. Canvas bags

Thicker than plastic bags, canvas alternatives can literally last half a lifetime. Available in a horde of colours and sizes, these are extremely environment-friendly. While canvas bags are easily available in the market today, you can DIY them at home and accessorise according to your taste. Canvas bags also available in cotton, organic cotton, and even hemp - it's, however, advisable to opt for a lighter bag as it can still hold more items than a plastic one.

3. Jute bags

Jute bags began flooding the market as soon as the realisation dawned on us about the harmful effects of plastic. Jute is a sustainable product that is not only low on cost when mass produced but also has various environment-friendly properties. It's biodegradable and water-resistant. Since it's also abundantly available, it helps reduce the pressure on cutting trees.

4. Water hyacinth bags

An aquatic plant, water hyacinth creates quite the havoc for waterbodies by producing rapidly and making all activities impossible - like fishing, swimming, boating. However, its use in making bags and other commodities is proving to be a successful endeavour. Its stems are dried and the fibre is used to produce bags that act as a great alternative to plastic. In fact, it can be used to make biodegradable plastic since it contains a high content of carbohydrate.

5. Paper bags

Paper bags may not be as strong as your jute or denim alternatives but they are a great way to lower the impact of plastic on the environment. They are extremely eco-friendly and safe for children to use. Easy-to-store paper bags come in a variety of hues with leading fashion brands using them to perfection. They are recyclable and contain no harmful components that can pose a health hazard.

6. Crochet bags

Bags made of yarn don't cost a bomb and are easy to make. There are a variety of eco-friendly yarns available such as reclaimed yarn, corn silk yarn, and recycled sari yarn. When it comes to their disposal, you can simply de-yarn the bag and reuse the material to make something new.

For a greener and healthier environment, we think it's safe to grab these bags instead of the evil that is plastic. We think it's safe to grab these bags instead of the evil that is plastic.
