43/55 McD Outlets in Delhi To Shut Shop. Thoughts?

This day marks the unfortunate end of an era as McDonald’s shuts the doors of 43 out of its 55 Delhi-NCR outlets today for an indefinite period, a news that is as shocking as it is heartbreaking. Our history with Ronald McDonald and his crew goes all the way back to 1994, when the fast-food joint first came in touch with Amit Jatia – the man who now owns and runs all the outlets in the southern and western parts of the country – and two years later the first outlet was opened in the heart of the country, New Delhi, on 13th October.

There has been no stopping them since: by 2015 they had over 300 outlets all over India! The Delhi outlet had a few other firsts: not only was it the first outlet in the entire South Asia region but it was also the world’s first McDonald’s restaurant which didn’t serve pork and beef based dishes.

Here is why this was such a huge deal: McDonald’s is a brand that is globally renowned for its beef-based burgers, so in order to enter the Indian market it made the challenging decision to give its menu a complete makeover, and boy, are we glad it did! Over the course of 21 years, McDonald’s, which turned 77 years old this May, has become an unforgettable part of our childhood (if not our lives). Who can forget their Happy Meals with the cute, collectible toys that we were crazy about as children? McDonalds had come to India at a time when there was nothing like it – the ‘quick service restaurant’ format and the ‘international’ food – in the domestic market, and it emerged victorious even when its competitors eventually rolled in. The red-headed clown will be sorely missed. What actually happened?

The 43 outlets that will shut down today are the ones jointly owned by Connaught Plaza Restaurants Ltd (CPRL) and McDonald’s. The ex-managing director of CPRL and McDonald’s are currently in the middle of a bitter dispute, due to which CPRL was unable to renew the compulsory regulatory health licences. As a result, the functioning of these restaurants has been suspended for the time being.

Yes. It''s disheartening for the Delhi-ites. McDonald''s has always been a cool eatery. It has been very successful down the years with millions of people ping in for their favourite snacks, my favourite being the McChicken burger and Black Forest McFlurry. I hope they open soon.
