20 Yrs of Titanic: Five Little Known Facts

James Cameron's masterpiece 'Titanic' which starred Hollywood superstars, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, completed 20 years on Tuesday, 19 December, 2017. This film is touted to be one of the most epic romantic sagas out there. Even after 20 years have passed, the film still remains a favourite amongst the fans. The film's presence in pop culture has never really faded, and rightfully so. On its 20th anniversary, we bring you 10 unknown facts about the film.

  1. Kate Winslet had to convince Leonardo DiCaprio to take the role of Jack Dawson: Kate Winslet had to convince Leonardo DiCaprio to take the role of Jack Dawson. After Kate found out that Leo was waffling about whether to accept the role, the actress tracked him down during a film festival in order to convince him to take the part. “I was thinking, ‘I’m going to persuade him to do this because I’m not doing it without him, and that’s all there is to it,’ ” Kate said. “‘I will have him.’ Because he is brilliant. He’s a genius, and that was absolutely why.”

  2. There's a real J. Dawson who died on the real RMS Titanic: Apparently, there's a real J. Dawson who actually died on the real RMS Titanic. But his name is Joseph Dawson, not Jack Dawson. James Cameron didn't know about it when he wrote the film, but now Joseph Dawson's grave in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is visited by fans every year.

  3. James Cameron did not want to include any song in the film: Reportedly, James Cameron did not want to include any song in the film. The composer, James Horner, secretly arranged with lyricist Will Jennings and singer Céline Dion to write 'My Heart Will Go On' and record a demo tape. James Cameron responded favorably to the demo and decided to include the song over the closing credits.

  4. The piece of wooden paneling that Rose floated on is based on a genuine artifact: The piece of wooden paneling that Rose floated on after the sinking is based upon a genuine artifact that survived the sinking and is on display at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax, Nova Scotia. James Cameron says that he is fed up with fans saying there was room for Jack on the door.
  5. The water was only 3 feet deep: The ship exterior set was constructed in a tank on a beach south of Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico. The water was only 3 feet deep while shooting for the film. The stuntmen in the engine room scenes were only about 5 feet tall to make the engine room look bigger and more realistic.

"The Titanic story itself has a timeless quality. It seems to exist outside our daily lives. As this straight moral lesson, it's something that fascinates us," director James Cameron

A few other things to note

  • The film, distributed by Paramount at home and Fox abroad, entered into movie history when it picked up 11 Oscars, including best picture and best director for Cameron.
  • With a worldwide gross of $2.2 billion, it was the most successful movie ever made until Cameron's "Avatar" (2009) took $2.8 billion at the box office.
  • Cameron had a full scale model of the ill-fated luxury liner constructed on 40 acres of Mexican waterfront bought by Fox, after receiving the blueprints from the original ship builder.
