19 Asteroids Discovered By Indian Students

In 2016, 19 asteroids have been discovered by Delhi students so far which are confirmed by International Astronomical Search Collaboration, Dr Hardin Simmons University, Texas, The United States of America. Since 2010, every year Indian students participate in a unique All India Asteroid Search Campaign by SPACE, an organisation working towards STEM learning of Astronomy and Space Science in India, in collaboration with International Astronomical Search Collaboration, Dr Hardin Simmons University, Texas, The United States of America.

Which organization helps students?
SPACE has been bringing All India Asteroid Search Campaign — a prestigious international science program to India for the last six years in collaboration with IASC (International Astronomical Search Collaboration) based in the USA. This program gives students the opportunity to be a part of real time science and to be at the forefront of international research.

How the students discover asteroids?
Participating students are given exclusive access to images of the sky taken through telescopes in the US and use specialised software to look for asteroids in the data. SPACE gives the students specialised training in the software and data analysis to make them equip for the program. The students get the opportunity to interact with international scientists and work in an international environment of scientific cooperation impossible for the school students otherwise.

Four schools have two provisional discoveries each to their credit
  1. D Agarwal & D Tyagi of GD Goenka Public School-Sector 9 Rohini
  2. D Gupta & D Jain of Salwan Public School-Sector 15 Gurgaon
  3. A Kumar & O Pathak of Sri Venkateshwara International School-Sector 18 Dwarka
  4. Rushil & G Sandeep of Ryan International School-Greater Noida

11 schools have one provisional discovery to their credit

  1. P Iyer & S. Chopra of ASN Senior Secondary School-Mayur Vihar Phase 1
  2. S Mohakud & R Laxman of Bal Bharati Public School-Noida
  3. A Ranjan & Y Jha of Delhi Public School-Sector 132 Noida
  4. M Manocha & D Lakhanpal of G D Goenka Public School-Sector 48 Gurgaon
  5. N Jain & H. Singh of ITL Public School-Dwarka
  6. AS Ramola & S Singh of The Indian Heights School-Dwarka
  7. M Ibrahimi & P Thareja of JBM Global School-Noida
  8. U Singh & M Dudeja of KIIT World School-Pitampura
  9. P Narang & M Agarwal of Manav Rachna International School-Sector 51 Gurgaon
  10. M Gupta & A Verma of Presidium School-Indirapuram Ghaziabad
  11. A Agrawal & K Arvind of The Khaitan School-Sector 40 Noida
It is interesting to note that the total tally of Provisional (Confirmed) Discoveries of Asteroids for AIASC 2010-2015 was 19. However, for this year within one phase 19 Provisional Discoveries were announced due to introduction of Pan Starrs telescope in the program. Its survey of new areas of the sky, state of the art CCD cameras, higher FOV, ability to see fainter objects made this difference.

wow!!!! This would be very nice

Harini MS NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

I think schools can give us students opportunities to spot asteroids in the sky. Not necessarily new ones, but any asteroid. A competition, probably.

I am also working on Astrometrica software without any support of a instructer. I am trying hard to achieve my goal to discover an asteroid.

Kavya Lilhare PRESIDIUM SCHOOL INDIRAPURAM

I had also got a chance to take part in the All India Asteroid Search but couldn''t go due to some reasons. But, being an x-student of SPACE, I know how much fun and valuable these things are.

Schools can give us opportunities that help us to do wonders. This would be great. Proud to be an Indian.
