11 Global Apps You Didn’t Know Were Made By Indians

You’re Bangalored’ is a term quite popular across the IT world across the globe - it simply means that losing one’s job to outsourcing in India, and more specifically, to Bangalore. That said, it is safe to say that India is excelling in technology through its youth. Many Indian kids are not only landing high-paying jobs in US but also making the world see India as a potential hub when it comes to technology.

So, how did that happen? All of it happened over the years with thousands flocking to Silicon Valley seeking better opportunities, Indian tech giants landing opportunities; and our sheer ability to learn and do more. We also served up innovation that the world embraced. Here are just a few of them that we bet you didn’t know were developed by Indians.

1. LinkedIn Plus

Global brand LinkedIn acquired Pulse for a whopping $90 million.. Developed by Alphonso Labs, founded by Stanford University graduate students Ankit Gupta and Akshay Kothari, the idea of Pulse came to the duo during 'Launch Pad', a course for aspiring entrepreneurs that challenged students to create a product in the course of 11 weeks. In an age of information overload, this app allows you to check out what’s trending with professionals around the world.

2 Signeasy

Developed by Sunil Patro, an IITian and an ex Microsoft employee, SignEasy lets a person sign documents digitally from anywhere in the world. This gave birth to hassle-free processes and it quickly became the second-most downloaded app on the iPad and the 5th most downloaded on the iPhone worldwide. It’s available on cloud mediums such as Evernote, Google Drive and AppSense.

3 Iris

Anyhow, in a world where a lot of Siri clones are thriving, Dextera was the first to make a duplicate version of Siri for Android users. Unfortunately, they have currently scrapped the app because they are working on a better version.

4 360 Panorama

Of late, our Facebook timelines have been flooded with people sharing 360-degree pictures from their travels. While it became quite exciting to move picture backwards, forward and even sideways to see exactly what the traveller saw, the information that it was made by an Indian firm made it even more thrilling. Developed by Occipital, 360 Panorama is an app to make your panorama the prettiest.

5 Paytm

One of the fastest growing companies in the online-tech space Paytm came years after PayPal, yet it is giving a huge competition to the brand. Operating in 16 countries, Paytm allows users to make online payments for everything. Book a flight, share money, book a movie ticket, recharge mobile and DTH and much more. It’s truly one of the most popular apps in India and is synonymous with online payments today. All thanks to the app, Vijay Shekhar Sharma the founder of the app is India’s youngest billionaire.

6 Hike Messenger

With 40%of Hike’s user base outside of India, especially in Europe and Latin America, the Indian messaging app developed by Bharti Softbank has been a huge hit with the masses. Similar to Whatsapp in many ways, Hike offers free calling, very different and interesting stickers for enjoyable communication, daily jokes, facts, camera filters and offline messages.

7 Zomato

The food-tech giant with its gargantuan reach is redefining how people discover eating out in over 19 countries. Founded by Deepinder Goyal, Pankaj Chaddah and Gunjan Patidar, Zomato is now a global brand. Founded in 2008, by 2009, they covered over 2,000 restaurants in three major cities: Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. Now they are serving people in UK, Ireland, Canada, Lebanon, UAE, Turkey, New Zealand, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, South Africa and many more. Available on both Apple and Android, Zomato is currently facilitating in-depth information on over 300,000 restaurants.

8 Shifu

Shifu is a goddamn genius. A to-do app, Shifu was developed by Prashant Singh, Michael Massey, and Deepansh Jain, in a bid to make life easier for its users. The app tracks your phone usage reminds you of the tasks that need to be done and puts an end to your procrastination. If you set a reminder, it will constantly tell you about the undone task, and works exclusively based on your location. For example, if you need to buy vegetables and you write it down in Shifu, it will track your location and remind you when you will in a store’s vicinity.

9 Friday

Another one by Dextera Bangalore, Friday is quite similar to Shifu in many ways. It functions like a personal assistant that reminds you of your tasks, tracks your activities on the phone and follows every order. It will also do stuff for you, based on your instruction. Only available on Android as of now, Friday caters to 7 million users and is constantly growing, 48% users from the US, 7% users from India and the remaining from around the world.

10 Game Your Video

With people talking in videos more than text, all of us needed an app that could record, edit and share videos with the world instantly So came Game Your Video - an app that offers real-time recording. Developed by Global Delight, GYV is currently serving only iPhone and iPad users and has won multiple awards for its simplicity and agility. Users love how easy and effortless its system is.

11 Newshunt

Just as the name suggests, Newshunt is for people who are tired of switching from one newspaper to another. So it collates news from different platforms and offers regional content in more than 11 languages and from 87 newspaper. Content in popular languages like Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and English is shared. The app also offers ebooks in 50 languages. As of now, it’s catering to over 40 million users and has more than a billion views. The brand has now changed its name to DailyHunt.
