Tips To Comprehend Passages

  • Read the passages thoroughly carefully skimming through the questions given at the end of the passage. Do not worry about words you do not know at this stage. Underline the words that you do not understand to facilitate a complete understanding of the passage. This will enable you to answer the vocabulary questions easily.
  • Be specific and brief in writing answers. Do not copy sentences from the text or give vague or general answers. Try to be specific. Read intensively the portion relevant to the answer.
  • Answer the questions in the corresponding tense of the question. Make sure you summarise and interpret information and not copy whole 'chunks' from the passage.
  • Concentrate on the vocabulary items and find out from the context the meanings of those words you do not know.
  • For writing skills, make a rough column in your answer sheet, writing down bullet points of the cause, effect, suggestion of whatever problem you are expected to address. Provide lots of ideas and inputs than just giving repetitive arguments in flowery language.
  • While answering questions in Literature section, using your own expressions as well as quoting from the book is very important. Make sure you highlight the keywords in each answer by underlining neatly with a pencil. Keep value points in mind while answering literature questions.
