Virat's Fitness Amazes Kapil Dev

On the impact scale, Virat Kohli could make Viv Richards' languid ferocity a forgotten chapter of cricket history. And future generations might even speak of the Indian captain ahead of Don Bradman. Equally, Kohli could burn out faster than either of them.

Hyperbole? Scare-mongering? Certainly not, thinks legend Kapil Dev, an astute reader of the game who believes Kohli has changed the parameters of what constitutes batting excellence. "It's scary how fast he is going (towards greatness)," Kapil said at a book launch here. "And when you go that fast, there is also fear (inside you).He is a mixture of Vivian Richards and Tendulkar. People will talk of him ahead of Don Bradman if he can go on."

His fitness regime
Kohli started taking fitness much more seriously after an ordinary Indian Premier League season in 2012. From training regime to eating habits, Kohli changed the way he would go about his fitness drills. Kojli always wanted to excel in all formats of the game, Tests, ODIs and T20s. For that he knew he had to be on top of his fitness to be a serious performer.

"My training was horrible, I ate so bad, I was up until late, I was having a drink or two regularly. It was a horrible mindset. The season ended and I was so thankful it was over. I went home, came out of the shower one day and looked at myself in the mirror and said 'you can't look like this if you want to be a professional cricketer.' "I was 11 or 12kgs heavier than I am now, I was really chubby. I changed everything from the next morning from what I eat to how I train. I was in the gym for an hour-and-a-half every day. Working really hard, off gluten, off wheat, no cold drinks, no desserts, nothing. It was tough.
