Trust In Pandya Paying Off

PALLEKELE: Hardik Pandya's breathtaking hundred on the morning of Day Two of the third Test, which pulverized the Lankan attack, has further boosted this rising all-rounder's stock.

The Baroda youngster's assault left many, including current India chief selector MSK Prasad, who witnessed it from the stands here, in complete awe. "Pandya's knock was breathtaking. I was fortunate to see it live. Our team was not in a comfortable position when he arrived at the crease yesterday, but the way he paced his innings was unbelievable," Prasad told TOI on Sunday, before going on to compare the talented 23-year-old with none other than legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev.

"I'm very happy to say that our search for an all-rounder has been successful in the form of Pandya. He will inspire many all-rounders in the country, just like what the legendary Kapil did." Later, Pandya, when informed about this lofty comparison, came out with an answer which tells you that he isn't swayed by all the praise coming his way.

"Obviously, if he (MSK) has said that, then it feels good. Even if I can be 10 % of what he (Kapil) was, I will be pretty happy in my life," said the explosive all-rounder.

Interestingly, Pandya, who joined a select group of Indian batsmen to have scored his maiden hundred in a Test, doesn't even remember when exactly was the last time he scored a ton before Sunday's power-packed knock. "Some four-five years back, I scored a hundred. Actually I don't remember," he muttered.

The young turk said the nervous 90s didn't affect him because he followed the advice of former India skipper MS Dhoni.

"This was the first time in my life I have not suffered from the nervous 90s. I don't remember my previous centuries - but I used to have butterflies in my tummy from what I can remember. When I bat, I'm in a different zone. I don't think about my personal scores and achievements. One thing I learnt from Mahi bhai is that you always put your team ahead, see the scoreboard and play accordingly. That has helped me," Pandya analysed.

A spread-out field, which saw almost every Lankan fielder stationed at the boundary during the later stages of his whirlwind effort, was a challenge which Pandya seemed to relish. "Could there have been a bigger opportunity? Nine wickets were already down, and I knew, if stay in the crease and connect the ball well, it would go for six. Even if I were to mis-hit, I had to. I had no choice. I was taking a calculative risk," he summed up.

Having smashed a fifty and a blazing century, taking a wicket whenever he's been brought on to bowl, and pulling off decent catches and stops in the field, Pandya was asked if he thinks Test cricket is an easy game. "Obviously not," he replied, before turning almost philosophical. "But I'm pretty glad. God has been kind to me. g whatever I have worked hard for," he said.

Before this series, Pandya was known more as an IPL star, with a few critics even questioning his place in the Indian Test team. Pandya showed how much a Test cap mans to him when he said: "Whenever a kid starts playing in India, he doesn't think of One-day cricket. Test cricket is always the goal. I always wanted to play Tests," he said.

Playing a Test match seems more difficult than playing the action-packed T20s and ODIs because one''s got to keep his nerve and play calmly to be the better one, outstripping the enemy. Pandya was always known as an IPL star who could smash the bowler for 6 6s in an over if he did receive the opportunity to do so. Now, looking at this awe-inspiring Test century, BCCI will take him in further tours and he''ll continue entertaining us like he has been doing always!
