Pandya Yet To Come Back In Action, Rohit And Shami Return

As members of the BCCI enjoyed their first evening under the lights after a gap of three years, celebrating the annual awards, the announcement of India's T20 squad to New Zealand - one that was scheduled to be made earlier in the evening on Sunday - was made late in the night.

As reported by TOI, the Board's media release mentioned that Hardik Pandya's rehabilitation process is "taking longer than expected" and therefore Tamil Nadu cricketer Vijay Shankar has been drafted into the India A side for the shadow tour.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami have returned to the 15-member T20 squad post mini breaks barring which, the team has no surprises. The five T20s in New Zealand will be played between January 24 and February 2. The national selection committee had submitted the team list - one that did not include Pandya - to the Board on early Sunday evening.

However, as per the usual norm, the chief selector did not address the media because of two reasons: A) This was merely a T20 team without surprises; B) The chief selector of the Board is presently on an extension because the new Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) has not been appointed yet.

Selection aside, nobody in the BCCI was, however, willing to answer a simple question: Was Hardik Pandya asked to undergo a fitness test? If yes, what was the result? If no, why was he selected to be part of the India A squad?

TOI had reported on Sunday that Pandya had not undergone any fitness test because his bowling workload is still being monitored. The all-rounder has returned to full fitness where the Yo-Yo tests and sprints are concerned but keeping in mind a long season that is coming up, those in the know have taken the call that Pandya doesn't need to be exposed to the workload of back-to-back international matches yet.

In fact, the team management has asked Pandya to head to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) next week where he will spend time recuperating. The all-rounder is expected to meet the team management in Mumbai on Monday to chalk out a detailed roadmap. If Pandya has to be a certainty for the World T20 in Australia, he needs to supremely fit during the IPL and the ensuing months - leading to the World T20 - in order to make the tour.

"So, what's the point rushing him? We all understand how crucial he becomes in this format. He should take his time and return when he's at his best," sources add.
