Stories of school cricket's protegees making waves in the local cricket is nothing new in a cricket crazy country like India. Right from Sachin Tendulkars, Vinod Kamblis of the 1980s to the Prithwi Shaws, Armaan Jaffer, Sarfaraz Khan and Pranav Dhanawade to today's generation. But none of them made an impact as early as New Delhi's four-year-old Shayan Jamal. One look at Shayan and you'd wonder can he even hold a full bat, leave alone scoring runs. However, when he picks up his bat and practices his forward defence and cover drive, it will leave you dumbstruck. Eyeing his immense talent with the bat, Shayan, a kindergarten student at his South Delhi's Hamdard Public School, has been fast-tracked into the school's Under-12 side. Shayan's father Arshad Jamal, who played club cricket in Delhi, has been supporting Shayan's dream to play for India one day. "Shayan's cricketing sense is strong and he his hungry to play cricket. If I give him a break for a day or two, he begins to pester me, asking ‘why we’re not going for nets! His game is natural. I am just trying to mould him," Arshad is quoted as saying. As far as Shayan is concerned, his idol is Virat Kohli and loves his hunger to score hundreds. "I want to play for India one day, like Virat Kohli. I admire him because he is a good batsman and scores centuries," Shayan said.
