‘I’m Trying Hard To Be Part Of The India Set-Up Again’

Dinesh Karthik is aiming to take the finisher's route back into the India side. The wicket-keeper batsman has fallen out of favour with the Indian side after managing only 14 runs in two innings at the World Cup back in July. But the 34-year-old has not lost hope of making a comeback.

With the T20 World Cup scheduled to be played in Australia next year and Rishabh Pant still settling down, Karthik feels that he can still make a difference if given a chance. "Finisher's role is something which I have always enjoyed. If given an opportunity, I will definitely like to prove myself again," Karthik told reporters here on Saturday.

The keeper-batsman was speaking on the occasion of 10-year anniversary of former team India trainer Shankar Basu's Primal Patterns, a holistic fitness studio and knowledge centre. Squash star Dipika Pallikal was also present where it was announced that Primal Patterns will be the high performance partners of Chennai tennis workshop run by Gopinath.

Returning to domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu, Karthik has been scoring runs consistently. While he has piled up 418 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy at an average of 59.71 and a strike rate of 121.15, he has been equally formidable in the Syed Mushtaq Ali too, hitting 301 runs at a strike rate of 126.47. The runs had come with Karthik coming to bat at No. 5 or 6 on most occasions.

"I haven't tried to do anything different and alter my game. I always ask myself that what is the toughest situation that a player faces. It is to win matches for your team, be it for TN or my IPL team (Kolkata Knight Riders). So I always want to bail out my team under tough situations by using my experience and prowess. Everybody tries to get into the India side and I'm not an exception. I am trying very hard to be a part of the India set-up again," Karthik said.

For now, Karthik is focusing on carrying his form into the Ranji Trophy. Tamil Nadu will open their campaign against Karnataka in Dindigul on Monday. "I am enjoying myself while playing for TN. You won't get a more focused team than us right now. We want to reach the knockouts but we have to take one step at a time because we are in a very tough group," Karthik said.

Even though TN lost to Karnataka in both Vijay Hazare and Mushtaq Ali finals, Karthik had led TN admirably. However, he has opted not to lead the side in Ranji. Asked whether he has any plans of giving up red ball cricket, the keeper-batsman said: "I am not retiring from red ball cricket. I am playing in the first two matches for now and will take it from there. Regarding captaincy, I believe it's time for somebody young and fresh to take over… Somebody who can take TN cricket forward in the next three-four years," Karthik said.
