Here Is The Latest Extinction Alert

Planet Earth is effectively defenceless in the face of a “dinosaur-killer” asteroid strike, a NASA scientist has warned. According to Dr Joseph Nuth, the planet is overdue for an extinction-level event involving a giant space object – such as an asteroid or comet.

Why this fear
According to Nuth, a number of close encounters over the last 20 years have given rise to such fears.

How to avoid it
Dr Nuth said he had recommended NASA build an interceptor craft and keep it in storage in order to cut down on the time it takes to organise such a mission. Dr Cathy Plesko, of Los Alamos National Laboratory said humans could deflect an Earth-bound asteroid or comet with either a nuclear warhead or a “kinetic impactor, which is basically a giant cannonball”

Close encounters in the past
  • Earth had a “close encounter” with a comet in 1996. Comet Hyakutake, dubbed ‘The Great Comet of 1996’ was one of the closest cometary approaches to the Earth in the previous 200 years.
  • In 2013, the Chelyabinsk meteor caused millions of dollars of property damage and injured more than a thousand people.
  • On Oct 19, 2014, the comet Siding Spring made a close flyby of Mars. It flew by Mars at a range of just 135,000 kilometres — close enough for the outer ridges of its tenuous atmosphere to pummel the planet with gas and dust. In just a short flyby, the comet dumped about 1,000 to 2,000 kg of dust made of magnesium, silicon, calcium and potassium — all of which are rock-forming elements — into the upper atmosphere.

In 1908, an asteroid named Barringer  flattened about 2,000 square kilometres of forest in Siberia.

Despite being so rare, if a large asteroid did hit Earth, it would cause extraordinary damage. In fact, you’re more likely to be killed by an asteroid than die in a shark attack.

Definitely we should start planning something for our defense and conservation of mankind. Perhaps a nuclear device

I don''t think that it would be easy for us to prepare a defence against a huge and destructive rock. We should start planning for the defence as fast as possible because we don''t know, when we might encounter another asteroid attack.

We should never let our human race to extinct .

sad to tell but it is real

It may cause the humans a big trouble but before it enters our planet Earth we should send something to break the asteroid into small rocks. So, that it may not cause any troouble to the humans.

I think ISRO and NASA should start preparations to defend the planet.

Divyam Maru MAHARAJA AGRASEN (SAPARATE)

Right now, we are of course enough advanced to make hydrogen bombs, why not think about a defence missile in case of this encounter. We are not completely helpless in this case. Perhaps an MIB 3 type nuclear shield or something is good. Perhaps, we should think of building interplanetary outposts case a worse case scenario prediction comes true.

After such advancements in space technology, we must be prepared to defend ourselves against asteroids after all, this isn''t the first time we face such a challenge. Steps must be taken to prevent such a catastrophe from taking place.

AKSHIT ASUNDI The Creek Planet School - Venus Campus

We should me ready for defence or the human race can get extinct like the dinosaurs. I''ve heard that this asteroid is half the Chicxulub, the one killed the dinosaurs ( 10 km ) and this one in 5 km. NASA and ISRO must plan something to protect us from this humoungus asteroid.
