Space Particles Behind Comp Crashes?

Alien subatomic particles raining down from outer space are wreaking havoc on your smartphones, computers and other personal electronic devices, claim scientists. When your computer crashes and you get the dreaded blue screen or your smartphone freezes and you have to go through the time-consuming process of a reset, most likely you blame the manufacturer, researchers said. In many instances, however, these operational failures may be caused by the impact of electrically charged particles generated by cosmic rays that originate outside the solar system, they said.

Cases In Point

In 2003, in Schaerbeek, Belgium, an SEU malfunction gave a candidate in a local election 4,096 additional votes— the error was only caught because the candidate got more than was possible
In a Qantas flight from Singapore to Perth, an SEU caused the plane to come out of autopilot mode resulting in the plane free-falling for 23 sec and injuring passengers

What Are Cosmic Rays

A long-standing puzzle in astrophysics is the source of ultra-high-energy particles from space that hit Earth. Called cosmic rays, they’re up to billion times more energetic than particles at Cern’s Large Hadron Collider. They strike the atmosphere and cause an enormous shower of other particles.

How it happens

When cosmic rays travelling at fractions of the speed of light strike the Earth’s atmosphere they create cascades of secondary particles including energetic neutrons, muons, pions and alpha particles

A fraction of these particles carry enough energy to interfere with the operation of micro-electronic circuitry

When they interact with integrated circuits, they may alter individual bits of data stored in memory. This is called a single-event upset (SEU) that causes unexplained glitches

These changes are enough to cause a computer to freeze and reboot, affecting the outcome of computerised elections

They can also cause other problems such as causing planes to suddenly come out of autopilot mode
