Great Cold Spot Found On Jupiter

Jupiter is best known for the Great Red Spot, a long-lived storm roughly the diameter of Earth. But astronomers have now discovered another such Great Spot, dubbed ‘Great Cold Spot’, created by the powerful energies exerted by the planet’s polar aurorae.

The Great Cold Spot

  • The ‘Great Cold Spot’ has been observed as a localised dark spot, up to 24,000 km in longitude and 12,000 km latitude.
  • It is located in the gas giant’s thin high-altitude thermosphere that can range between 426 and 726 degrees Celsius. It is much cooler than the surrounding atmosphere.
  • Since it’s in the upper atmosphere and much cooler than the surrounding atmosphere, it has been named the Great Cold Spot.

Its features

  • Unlike the giant planet’s familiar Great Red Spot, this newly-discovered weather system is continually changing in shape and size.
  • It’s formed by the energy from Jupiter’s polar auroras.

Its discovery

  • The Great Cold Spot was first discovered on Jupiter using observations taken of Jupiter’s auroral region by the CRIRES instrument on European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile. nAccording to scientists, the dark expanse could be thousands of years old.

The Great Red Spot is a giant, spinning storm in Jupiter’s atmosphere. It is like a hurricane on Earth, but it is much larger. Jupiter’s Great Red Spot is more than twice the size of Earth! Winds inside this storm reach speeds of about 270 miles per hour.

Jupiter stands out to be among those gas giants which are very less explored.
