Legal Literacy Workshop On CACA

Educators at The HDFC School recently attended a workshop organised by District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Pune in collaboration with Social Axiom Foundation on legal awareness on child related laws and an overview on project CACA (Children Against Child Abuse): A child safety programme for schools. It was attended by various school principals, counsellors and NGOs to spread awareness.
The facilitators for the session were CP Bhagwat, member secretary, DLSA (7th Sr. Div. Civil Judge, Pune), Pradeep, project director, CACA- Children Against Child Abuse, RV Adone, special charge, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO), AP Giradkar, joint civil judge (Sr. Div. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Pune).
Bhagwat started the programme by giving introduction on the need of the hour which is the empowerment of children through schools to prevent sexual abuse. It is the schools who have the unique power to educate the parents and the community, along with the knowledge and skills to communicate and resolve the issue in a constructive way, he stated.
CACA is a school driven, child-centric, preventive and holistic project that creates a safety net for children from abuses. Pradeep, the project director of CACA gave a brief introduction on safe and unsafe touch, health and hygiene, cyber bullying etc. He also gave an introduction to the safety workbook series for children from Kindergarten to class XII. These booklets are for parents, teachers and support staff of the school where CACA workbooks are taught.
Adone enlightened the participants with on the factors viz. importance of principals, counsellors and teachers in cases of abuse, collect all relevant documentation of bus/ cab drivers, the significance of conducting counselling sessions to create awareness, maintaining all school records such as medical tests, birth certificates, Bonafide certificates, school leaving certificate etc., police and area officers' visit to the school on a regular basis to introduce them to children along with a lady police officer and provisions of POCSO Act.
AP Giradkar enlightened the participants of the Juvenile Justice Care and Protection Act (2015) and criterias during the court session. They were informed that the juvenile court has an advocate, psychologist and a social worker present, mandate of having juvenile police in every police station among others.
The workshop was very informative and enlightening as it incorporated the legalities of POCSO, CACA, Juvenile Justice Act, Children's rights, and information required by schools.
