Fun activities mark literary fiesta

Literature opens the door to discovering something extraordinarily imaginative and allows one to visualise things in a different perspective. In order to bring the students closer to literature and its universal appeal, the management of Delhi Public School Medchal Highway organised a Literary Week for consecutive five days with various competitions. The aim was to create an understanding and awareness about the importance of reading among the students.
It was a week of excitement with the children engaged in various competitions. The students were given a platform to hone their skills and foster the reading habits. A series of activities were organised across PP1 to class IX. The students were asked to prepare charts based on the life of great poets, novelists, essayists, playwrights and make illustrations of some famous works.
The Literary Week began with 'In The Character' competition, where tiny tots took up the roles of their favourite fictional characters like Harry Porter, Hungry Caterpillar, Goldilocks, Snow White and Cinderella. Each competitor had to deliver a few lines that the character would have spoken.
A number of competitions were conducted for the students of the primary segment. The students of classes III and IV participated in storytelling with props. The competition gave wings to the students’ imagination where the characters from books came alive through their narration. It was a medley of scintillating performances and artistic props.
Using a puppet to tell a story was a wonderful technique that led the students of class I and II to discover the joy of literature and learning. Another event for the primary wing was poem recitation.
The confidence and wit of the students from classes VI to IX were tested during the Mad Ads competition. This competition helped students to think on their feet and act without any hesitation. The sarcastic humour brought out their creativity through the madness and also familiarised them with the skills of presentation and marketing.
The Battle of Wills can only be won through facts, research, wit and confidence. A debate was held for the students of classes VI to IX to help them put forward their points confidently. The students also got an opportunity to think critically, develop their academic research skills and improve their communication abilities.
The week came to an end with a scintillating performance by the students of class IX. The students enthralled the audience by bringing the tragic heroes Macbeth, Romeo and Hamlet alive through Shakespeare's soliloquies.

Manjari Ghosh,
Delhi Public School Medchal Highway
