Youngest Memory Champ

Saswat Satapathy, 19, the youngest National Memory Champion in the world, is ready to take on the global champions in London in December. He talks to Times NIE on his plans ahead

Q Tell us about your  talent?
I can remember any kind of data— numbers, words, pages and sequel of decks of cards. So, it becomes easy for me when I take part in competitions. I beat 20 participants from across the country to win the Indian memory championship recently.  Each participant was given a set of numbers and words in a random order. We were supposed to memorise in a given time. I also broke a record in the deck of cards. I memorised it in 56 sec, which was 1.52 seconds earlier.

Q How do you memorise things?
There’s a trick in remembering things. Whatever you want to remember needs to be visualised first and then converted into a story.  But the trick is to do it instantly.

Q Is it mnemonics?
Exactly. This memorising technique is known as mnemonics that aims to translate information into a form that the human brain can retain better than its original form. I am being trained  since 2009 under the guidance of Anand Kashibhatla, a  memory trainer.

Q What is the technique?
We use  COMBS—colourful, moving, big and strange. The story has to be weaved in accordance with these parameters.

Q How long do you practice?
I usually practise for 2-3 hours daily.

Q Does it help you in studies?
It helps me in Biology but not in subjects like English.

Q Do you help friends in memorising?
My friends think I am special as I help them memorise some difficult numbers especially phone numbers and data.

Accolades
1 2010: Won one silver and one bronze in the kids’ category of memorising competition
2 2011: Won two bronze medals in the junior category
3 Represented India in the World Maths Championship in Germany in 2011
4 Has memorised 500 years’ calendar and 500-digit numbers
