Young Nobel Laureates

The Nobel Prize is regarded as one of the most prestigious awards in the world. From 1901 to 2014, 889 Nobel Laureates have been awarded, among them, 25 were organisations and 864 were to individuals. Now one would expect the Nobel prize to be awarded to someone who comes from an industrialised country (and of the "right colour" as was the convention in the early 20th century), and to someone of great wisdom, experience and learning. However, since the 1900s there have been young winners who shaped the world we live in today thanks to their discoveries in sciences and achievements in peace and social development.

Malala Yousafzai (Pakistan)
In 2014, Malala Yousafzai became the youngest Nobel laureate to win the Nobel Peace Prize, at the age of 17. She stood up for the right to education for girls despite threats for Islamic radicals. Yousafzai paid with blood when a terrorist attempted to kill her while she was returning from school. Today she is completing school in the UK and continues fighting for the right to education for all children. She was the second Pakistani to receive a Nobel Prize.

Tawakkol Karman (Yemen)
Tawakkol Karman, a journalist and politician, won the Nobel Peace Prize in the year 2011 when she was 32 years old. She won the award for her struggles related to the safety of women and for women's rights. She was the first Yemeni and the first Arab woman to win a Nobel Prize.

Mairead Corrigan Maguire (UK)
Mairead Corrigan Maguire won the Nobel Peace Prize in the year 1976, at the age of 32 for co-founding the Community For Peace People, an organisation dedicated to the peaceful resolution of ethnic and nationalist conflicts in Northern Ireland. She went on to win the Norwegian People's Peace Prize, Pacem in Terris and Carl von Ossietzky Medal.

Rudolf Maussbauer (Germany)
German physicist Rudolf Maussbauer won the Nobel Prize for Physics in the year 1961, at the age of 32 for his research concerning the resonance absorption of gamma radiation.

Tsung-Dao Lee (USA)
Tsung-Dao Lee won the Nobel Prize for Physics in the year 1957, at the age of 31 years. He got the prize for his investigation of the parity laws, which has led to several discoveries regarding the elementary particles.

Carl D. Anderson (USA)
Physicist Carl D. Anderson was the winner of Nobel Prize for Physics in 1936. He was just 31 years old and had discovered the positron.
