Young Chess Master

Suhaani Lohia, Woman Candidate Master only at 6, has the focus and dedication of seasoned players.

It probably took Suhaani Lohia's parents more time to convince her to talk about her chess achievement than to talk her into taking to the sport a couple of years ago. The six-year-old, who claimed the Woman Candidate Masters title on Sunday by finishing on the podium at the Asian School (u-7) chess championship in Tehran, began her chess training when she was just four. She spends almost 12 hours a week practising under G Balaji and his team of coaches at the South Mumbai Chess Academy. Her initiation into the sport had started even earlier. The toddler would sit for hours watching her elder brother Siddhant, who also won the bronze medal in the same tournament in the U-11 blitz event, and learn the nuances of the game. And it was this interest for the pieces that convinced her parents to put her through the game.  "Normally kids are fidgety and don't sit at one place. But Suhaani used to watch us throughout when we used to work with her brother," Balaji told Mirror. When Siddhanth played rating tournaments, Suhaani would tag along with him. That way, she got the experience of playing stronger opponents at early age. She won her first National School Chess Championship (u-5) medal the same year and has already bagged second place finishes in the u-8 rating competition at the state and national level.

Top rated player in the world
In fact, the student of the Dhirubhai Ambani International School was among the top-6 rated players in the world in the u-7 category when the list was announced in January and her father Sushir believes that her strength is her focus. "She is good even in athletics and swimming and has won numerous awards in the school events. But playing chess is something she loves," he added. Lohia explains that initiating Siddhant into chess was a conscious decision after they found out that the boy could solve puzzles for elder kids rather easily even when he was just five. In Suhaani's case, she just followed suit in her elder brother's footsteps and they decided to extend all the support.

Bigger challenges ahead
The medal in Tehran and the Woman Candidate Master title is just the first step in a long journey for Suhaani and coach Balaji is already thinking of the challenges ahead.  "The focus now is to improve rating to around 1300-1400 so that she can play higher level tournaments with the focus on World Youth championship later this year," said Balaji, who points out that end game is Suhaani's strongest point as she has the maturity to stay patient and wait for her opponents to make mistakes for her to pounce on.
