Teen Invents Test For Cancer

Jack Andraka, 18, has developed a simple test which allows the detection of pancreatic cancer. The dipstick test may revolutionise the treatment of the deadly disease, which currently kills 19 out of 20 patients. Andraka speaks on his discovery...

Q How did you start your research?
When I was 14,  a family friend died from pancreatic cancer. I didn’t even know what it was! I was sad and confused and I decided to learn more about it.

Q Did you fear that your reserach may not work?
Of course, nothing was easy! I used the wrong-sized test tube in the centrifuge, so the test tube with cells broke. I had spent weeks working on the project. I also contaminated the cell cultures once and had to start all over again.

Q You got 1,999 rejections when you had written to 200 scientists asking for space in their lab. what kept you going?
I looked on the internet and found the emails of many professors who were working on pancreatic cancer. I thought I could just sit back and wait for a professor to accept me! That didn’t work and I had to send my proposal to more people. I was getting very discouraged but I kept sending proposals until one day I got a response from professor Anirban Maitra. I showed up after reading 500-odd journal articles. The professor finally accepted my work.
