All About Fun

Movie: The DUFF

I haven't watched any of the latest-Oscar- winning- much- talked- about -movie in a while, given all the exams and school pressure that every 16 year old has to face (phew), but I did somehow manage to watch a slightly older movie called The DUFF. The DUFF. The word at first glance seems meaningless right? This is the very reason for which I chose to see this movie. Apparently it stands for Designated Ugly Fat Friend. This movie deals with the everyday story of how there are these "labels" in every high school. You are either the "The Jock", "The Cheerleader", "The Nerd", "The Goth" or maybe you are still trying to find out which label you exactly fit into. Bianca, the smart and funny senior, rudely realizes the fact that she had been a "DUFF" to her best friends all this while. The DUFF was a new social class that included all people who belong to a certain group of friends, but were the "worst" among that group. The DUFFs always made their friends seem prettier, smarter and just a whole lot better, since they weren't as good as as the others. The DUFF was "comparitive" which meant they need not necessarily be Fat or Ugly. They just comparitively weren't that good. When Bianca realizes this, she blocks her friends out and seeks the help of the jock, Wes, her neighbor and reluctant childhood friend to create her new persona. But she finally realizes in the end, that each and everyone of us is a DUFF to someone or the other. There is always going to be someone who is pettier, smarter or funnier. But the point was to accept yourself for who you truly are.

The teen comedy touches upon intimate subjects that are worth revisiting- especially in a culture that has become increasingly obsessed with social perception. But while doing so, it also scores tons of laughs in the process. Ultimately I think it is a movie that should provide a entertaining and relatable viewing for its intended audience.
