Will We Ever Get A Space Lift?

Last stop - Moon!

The space elevator offers a whole new way of getting into orbit, which was first an idea over a century ago by the Russian astronautic pioneer Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. Electric lifts travel up a cable anchored at the Earth’s equator and extending up to an orbiting counterweight whose movement keeps the cable firm. It can be done instead of using rockets.

As simple as it sounds, the practicalities are vast. Among them is the need for a cable material that is capable of enduring the enormous tension. For a long time it was discussed that that carbon nanotubes would be enough for the job. However, researchers at Hong Kong Polytechnic University have shown that a single misplaced atom in the cable could drastically challenge its strength. The search is now on for more robust materials, with no real outlook of creating a defect-free cable.
