When Were The First Barcodes Used?

Which fish is easily scanned at checkout aisles? The barracoda

A overhead conversation between the president of a local food chain and the dean of the Drexel Institute of Technology, on the need to have a system that automatically read product information during checkout, led engineering student Bernard Silver and his friend Norman Joseph Woodland to start working on the prototype of the barcode system.

Their first working system used ultraviolet ink, but the ink faded too easily and was expensive. They applied for and were issued a patent for ‘Classifying Apparatus and Method’ in 1952.

Other systems were created over the next two decades but they were used almost exclusively in factory inventories – General Motors, for instance, had a system that identified the different types of car axle. It was only in 1970s that barcodes were first used in retail.

In 1974, NCR (National Cash Register) introduced barcodes in alocal store in Ohio for a trial period. The first item to be scanned was a ten-pack Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit Gum. The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, now displays the wrapper and receipt.
