Winter Accessories For Pets

You may not feel like walking your dog on cold, wintry nights but try to maintain a regular routine as it is important to keep your pet healthy and fit. Especially as the nights are getting dark early always remember to wear reflective clothing when you're buying pet accessories, as well as making sure your dog is wearing a reflective collar to keep them safe and visible to traffic.

It is important to provide somewhere warm and comfortable for your pets to sleep during the winter months. While you're organising your pets accessories, make sure they aren't in a damp or draughty part of the house and if you can raise their dog beds off the floor then this will stop them from catching a chill from the cold floor.

Both cats and dogs love to warm themselves by the fire but keep an eye of them as they can burn themselves if they get too close. Place their bed or blanket a safe distance from the fire to make sure they aren't too close to the flames or any spitting coals.

When walking your dog make sure that you keep them well away from rivers and ponds that have frozen as the thin ice may break under the dog’s weight. Keep them on a lead so that you have control of them at all times, and if you feeling guilty for not let them have a proper run then invest in a flexi lead that will allow you to have control of your dog but give them the room to roam.

Outdoor cats often look for somewhere warm and snug during the winter time to climb into, including vehicles. Before you start the engine of your car make sure that you bang on the bonnet of your car to scare any stowaways.

As in the summer months, take care when leaving your pets in your car for long periods of time during cold spells. A car can act as a fridge in the cold weather, holding in the cold and causing the pet to freeze to death.

Road salt and de-icing chemicals can damage pets’ paws, as well as hazardous if ingested. Make sure you wash your pets’ paws after they have been outdoors and if you are de-icing pavements or a drive opt to use sand or a nontoxic alternative to salt.
